Re: Do Animals Grieve?

I would imagine that it would depend upon the intelligence of the animal we're discussing. But in the more intelligent species I would say that they most definitely do grieve and feel other emotions as well.

Re: The World's Top Ten Most Generous Countries

lyndon taylor wrote:I think it rather suspicious that in a BBC article, 6 English speaking countries make it into the top ten, Is there something inherently generous about speaking English????
Not really. The English speaking countries probably have more disposable income and therefore are able to be more generous.

Re: A trip to the Cambodian Buddhist Temple

His reasoning for saying the 5th precept was the most important is because breaking the 5th precept could lead you to break the other 4, for instance you're probably not going to go off and kill someone unless drugs or alcohol is involved, at least that, as I understand it, was his reasoning. That ...

Re: A trip to the Cambodian Buddhist Temple

I find it interesting that he believes the 5th precept is the most important (alcohol/drugs). I personally don't have a dog in this fight but I do find that this is the most controversial of the precepts among westerners. I suppose I was a bit luckier than most as I'd already left that part of my li...

Re: Right speech in a blue collar environment

I've worked in a blue collar environment my whole working life and sometimes you've just got to box on with the best of them. Quite a bit of what constitutes harsh language is who it's aimed at and how it's said. I certainly wouldn't talk to my workmates wives and children in the same way that we ta...

Re: Romantic Love

I've been married for 15 years and have 4 kids varying in age from 23 to 7. Every person that you come across in this world is capable of causing you suffering. It's up to you to decide which ones are worth suffering for. My 2 oldest boys mother left me with the kids when they were 3 and 1. I learne...

Re: Radicalism on buddhist forums

Communism/socialism are great theories. The main problem that I see with both of them is that they take away a mans hopes and his incentive to try and work harder than the next bloke.

I attend a Thai Forrest monastery on a semi regular basis. I do know that lay devotees also offer flowers & fruit. My youngest daughter loves doing this for us when we go.

Re: Do Buddhists believe in prediction for the future?

It's best to make your own luck by following the 5 precepts & the noble 8fold path as best you can. If everything in life was predetermined there seems little point in following Buddhism , accumulating merit or any other religion for that matter.
