Re: Story about Deerghayu or similar name

From the Dictionary of Pali Proper Names: Āyuvaḍḍhana Kumāra Two Brahmins of Dīghalaṅgika became ascetics and practised austerities for forty-eight years. Then one of them returned to the world and having procured cattle and money, married and begot a son whom he called Dīghāyu. Later, when his for...

Re: Story about Deerghayu or similar name

I have never heard of that story. But a similar name that comes to mind is Dighavu (or Dighayu) http://www.palikanon.com/english/pali_names/d/diighaayu.htm, or Dighiti. No idea what the difference between these forms is. There is a jataka story about a prince Dighavu or Dighayu or Dighiti: Jat 371:...

Story about Deerghayu or similar name

Hello Everyone, Today I need help from all of you to find-out about following story. I briefly heard it on a sermon but couldn't find more information on the web. A Sri Lankan monk was giving a sermon and mentioned about a Price or a boy who lived in Buddhs time. He had about 7 days to live when he ...

Re: Merit accumulation in our past lives

Thanks for the reply. I totally agree with you. Do you think that there is no Sutta for what I'm trying to find. Is it just like general teaching etc. To go on a journey and reach your destination you need several factors: A vehicle The ability to drive it An accurate map Fuel for the journey, but y...

Re: Merit accumulation in our past lives

I am not aware of a sutta where the Buddha has said this. Maybe, this is mentioned in the commentaries, I think the aim of the priest was to make people aware of their store of merit which has been accumulated in previous lives. Here in Sri Lanka, you find less people meditating compared to the numb...

Re: Merit accumulation in our past lives

Probably the speaker believes in the "there is no doer, no experiencer, just phenomena flowing on" orthodoxy that developed in the 5th century AD, so he doesn't really believe merit accumulates over lives, but rather than say that he comes up with some other excuse to discourage meritorious acts. T...

Merit accumulation in our past lives

I heard (online) following in a talk by a Sri Lankan bikku, Rajagiriye Ariyagnana. "We had accumulated many merits in our past lives. If we stack things that we had given to Arhaths in our past lives it will rise upto a tall mountain..... Buddha had mentioned that we are not less with merits, there ...

Reference to Rebirth by different people

Hi, I'm trying to find about people who discovered or have strong original opinion about rebirth on their own in the past. Or it could be original reference to rebirth on different sources. Presently I know of following people, please let me know if you know anyone else. 1. Buddha - As it is mention...

Re: Did John Peacock got 'Karaniya Metta Sutta' wrong?

I had much faith in Dr.Peacock's teachings. I like to keep that faith. Why not put all your faith in the Triple Gem? Leave none of it for anything else and you won't get confused. :anjali: When looking at present day Buddhism it's hard for me to have faith in Triple Gem just like that. There are so...

Re: Did John Peacock got 'Karaniya Metta Sutta' wrong?

My whole point is, if he got this wrong (I have not come to that conclusion yet), what else he might had taken wrong. I will not be confidant in his teaching as I'll have doubt. Do you think he was correct on his 'Metta as a path to awakening' talks? If so can you please explain in details. This is...
