Re: Ontology vs Soteriology

Friends  When I was young, ontology mattered a lot more. Now that I am getting older, soteriology has taken prime importance. All the details give me a headache, and the only question I keep asking myself is: what is the way out? Have you had a similar experience? At some point, you stop wor...

Re: Correct apprehension of impermanence

It's worth noting that one of the few "universal teachings" (and by that I mean it was explicitly taught to be cultivated by both monastic and lay disciples) is the below 5 reflections, all strongly related to impermanence as one would reflect upon it reflectively, and much less to the momentariness...

Re: Holocaust denial, revisionism or agnosticism and monastic duties

Dear Venerable Bhikkhus and Vinaya Experts Some recent allegations I recently read about the sin of "revisionism" in respect to common interpretations of the Pali suttas brought to mind the actual crime of Holocaust denial and even Holocaust revisionism that exists under the laws of many nations. B...

Sam,

You danced well on that line between moderator and regular member, contributing while refraining from the power trips that entice those who are given the opportunity to take them.

Re: Theravada for Beginner

For getting started with Sutta's, many recommend Bhikkhu Bodhi's Anthology called In The Buddha's Words . He has fairly long introductions to the chapters which are helpful. (There is a beginner resource thread at the top of the beginner forum section.) Edit/Add: This esplains the factors of the Ei...

Re: Can anyone refute this depressing viewpoint?

There is no "free unconditioned will" according to Dhamma. I think this is obvious. Though, we live in a world of illusions, where things exist by themselves and among them there is "free will", based on a sense of selfhood. I'm also wondering if there is anywhere in the Pali Canon where the Buddha...

Re: Selling the dhamma for profit... Meditation apps

Selling the dhamma is getting crazy... With 25,000,000 downloads, guided meditation app Calm is worth $250Million US dollars, and made a profit of $40 million last year. Meditation is BIG business! The guided meditation app Calm costs users $12.99/month, $59.99/year. The app Headspace costs $12.99/...

Re: How do people know about rebirth?

My problem and the main source of confusion about rebirth is the idea that somehow those tendencies are carried from one life to another, even if those life are not connected by bloodline, social interaction, or something like that. It's amazing that after 2500 years, there is no consensus about th...

Happy birthday and happy anniversary!

I see you're sporting Raiders swag already. Oakland won't be the same without the Raiders, but I guess Vegas deserves a team. It's a great place for sports I'd think. Watch the Raiders win a Superbowl once they move from Oakland...

Re: Polyamorous relationships

1. If the third precept is about cheating , perhaps people could find amendment so that not to cheat and yet possible to engage in relationships that do not violate it . Eg. A person married with a lawful wife where the law indicated polygamous marriage is not allowed while other wifes whom are not...

Re: Polyamorous relationships

The ideal follower of the Buddha is free from lust and thus celibate. A human during mankind's most degenerate age is a lustful incestuous beast. So from that, I think we can safely infer that polyamorous relationships tend one toward degeneration, not distinction, and strongly at that. I am not su...
