Now, there are two destinations for a person with wrong view, I tell you: either hell or the animal womb. Whatever you do, don't google Total Information Awareness.
Reminds me of the film Minority Report but with technology instead of psychic humans. As artificial intelligence technology is further developed, it could look more and more like that.

Re: Next 24 hours are super important (huge tensions regarding Syria)

Regarding Syria, I think it is very unlikely Russia would directly attack the US navy. It's in neither country's interest, nor the world's for that matter, to go to war. Except there's one little but very important nuance to consider - that is - Putin's sanity. After 18 years of ultimate power he i...

Re: Next 24 hours are super important (huge tensions regarding Syria)

Why is no topic here about the important events that are about to happen regarding Syria ? I sometimes come here to check the news. I think "if something super important is happening, it must be there in the dw news section". But since this news is not here, maybe I shouldn't rely on DW to get the ...

Re: Free speech, mere offense, direct harm & antisemitism

As for my own view, I cannot in good conscience remain a member of a forum in which there is so much ill will, intolerance and outright prejudice expressed to non-Buddhist groups or individuals. So I will follow this thread to its natural conclusion and sign off. The apparent decision to become a c...

Re: Buddhism & Amulets?

A scam is deliberate, fraudulent, scheming behavior. It's possible you were scammed, but I think it's more likely that he believed in some magical power of the amulet and wanted to share it with you for your benefit, in which case he had good intentions despite his mistaken views. And more on charms...

Re: Reference on "clinging to thought characteristics"?

The first thing that comes to mind is the stock formula for sense-restraint. Venerable Bodhi: “On seeing a form with the eye, he does not grasp at its signs and features. Since, if he left the eye faculty unguarded, evil unwholesome states of covetousness and grief might invade him, he practises the...

Re: Is stealing always wrong?

And I require a clarification from someone well read in suttas - did Buddha urge us to attain "Nibbana asap" or to begin following the path that will eventually lead us out of samsara (probably after a million years) without wasting a day of precious human life? He certainly encouraged his renuncia...

Re: Wat Chaimongkol? Gyuto? Theravada?

I've been to the Gyuto foundation once to see Thupten Jinpa, the Dalai Lama's longtime translator, give a talk. It felt like a peaceful place from what I remember. Its essentially a Tibetan monastery in a nice residential neighborhood in the hills of Richmond.

Re: Repulsiveness in food (excerpts from Vsm & Sutta)

Reflecting on the living beings killed for food, whether deliberately or inadvertently, can be productive of disenchantment toward food. If you think of it on an atomic level, some of the atoms we're eating were once the bodies and then the corpses of beings: human, animal, and what have you. When t...

Re: Finding two sutta references

Another for your first sutta from MN 61, the Ambalatthika-rahulovada Sutta (Venerable Thanissaro's translation), a very important and practically useful sutta: I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Rajagaha, at the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground. At that tim...

Re: Acting is wrong livelihood?

By the way the sutta is framed .. Reading the sutta, I don't read it as saying that "those who induce sensual states in others will be reborn in purgatory." It is specifically talking about actors (Venerable Thanissaro's translation): "Thus the actor — himself intoxicated & heedless, having made ot...

Till now I had only considered trading in meat or weapons or alcohol as wrong livelihood. It is those in addition to trading in human beings or poison. So 5 total. By the way the sutta is framed .. A natagāmani (stage-manager) of Rājagaha. With a company of five hundred men, he gave dramatic perfor...
