Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

To be honest with you I do not think that Stephen Hawking is the smartest guy on earth. He might not for there's another obvious candidate for the "smartest guy on earth" title whose famous equation starts with the same letter as his last name. But there's no dispute that those 2 guys are in a leag...

Re: Recurrent Clostridium Difficile. Any advice?

Were I in your shoes, I'd stick with antibiotics for treatment before trying alternative/complementary medicine. If one antibiotic doesn't work, another may because their mechanisms of attacking the bacteria are different. There are almost certainly stronger oral antibiotics than what you're taking ...

Re: Picking up the threads of Theravada again

The anthology from Bhikkhu Bodhi is a great place to start. The paper book can be purchased or see this discussion: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=14640 I second this. There are many good places you could start to learn about the Buddha's teachings in the Pali suttas. Of all of them, this ...

Re: How to deal with ignorant brutes in a discussion

A lot of heated discussions start off discussing a topic but reach a point where it's no longer about the topic, but more about winning the argument. I have noticed that I have done this in the past as well. It occurred to me one day, "Why is it so important to prove to the other person, that I am ...

Re: paliaudio.com—New Sutta Recordings Website

Another suggestion would be to put the sutta numbers in the file name metadata. For example, instead of "All the Taints" it could be "MN 2 - All the Taints." This makes it easier to keep the files in order when downloaded and having the sutta number linked with the name is good information anyway.

Re: paliaudio.com—New Sutta Recordings Website

I listened to a few recordings from MN in full on my walk today. Some points: • The gong is a nice touch - keep it! • The repetition format is great, not too much and not too little - keep that up! • The sound quality is excellent - keep that up too! • The reader, Roland Kitchen, is excellent, very ...

Re: paliaudio.com—New Sutta Recordings Website

Very clean appearing website and good design. A brief listening-skim tells me they sound like good recordings read by a pleasant and professional voice. A good selection too and I'm sure more will be added.

Many thanks for providing this resource.

For those experienced with yoga, could you list those poses you know of that lead to knee pain?

Re: How do you train for Sila?

The foundation for sila for laypeople is the 5 precepts. Upholding the precepts and being mindful of them is training for sila. If they are easy for someone personally, that is great. But being easy doesn't diminish their worth, importance, and the respect we should afford to them. This is especiall...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

Regarding the OP... There's a pattern I've noticed occurring sometimes. When people, especially young men, who are relatively new to taking the Dhamma seriously for themselves come to this forum, they are often enthusiastic. Enthusiasm is great, but on this online forum environment it can very easil...

Re: Overcoming Fear of Death

That's a great sutta that rightviewftw posted in reply to your question. It's AN 4.184. Here is Venerable Sujato's translation: Then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said t...

It has many possible adverse effects ("possible" because individuals often react differently to the same drug) including increased appetite and weight gain. The Buddha talks about gambling in DN 33 (Venerable Narada translation): "There are, young householder, these six evil consequences in indulging in gambling: (i) the winner begets hate, (ii) the loser grieves for lost wealth, (iii) loss of wealth, (iv) his word is not relied upon in a court of law, ...

Re: Using Ear Muffs During Meditation?

Hello there, I don't think it has to be either-or. Personally, if it's noisy sometimes I put on my active noise canceling headphones with some deep brown noise to drown everything out (including my heartbeat). Sometimes I'll just meditate with the noise. Either way, I'm putting effort into the pract...
