Re: Does Anyone Know

Does anyone hava a sutta name for this quote?

“What do you think about this?” said the Lord. “What is the purpose of a mirror?” “It is for the purpose of reflection, sir”, replied Rahula. “Even so, an action to be done by body, speech or mind should only be done after careful reflection.”

Re: Thailand Trip- Seeking Advice

Hi sister, Regarding places to do a retreat i suggest googling 'dhamma teaching in english chiang mai' or just 'english dhamma teaching thailand' and see how that goes...depending on where you end up, doing 'dana' could mean offering alms say in the morning if there are monks on 'pindabat' or you co...

Re: Can (or should) Buddhist communities become more democratic?

its relative to the individuals involved as to whether the abbot system/committee system functions better. In the case of say the London Vihara, the story goes the committee was dissolved and they went with a kappiya system to avoid the 'ditthi-gantha' I.e the endless dramas associated with a commit...

Re: How to handle a beggar want to stay in your temple?

well eventhough it was a women we still gave her acccomodation and tried pur best to help, if it was a man and there was room and I was the senior monk/abbot I would have let her/he stay longer amd then made a decision later on as to the eventual outcome, but the problem is as always...people's view...

Re: How to handle a beggar want to stay in your temple?

well it depends, the other day it happenned here (lay centre with kutis for monks), a homeless lady showed up who needed help, the laypeople started freaking out but in the end we thankfully did help her. It depends on the situation, in asia its generally easier to help such people in a long term se...

Re: The Saddhamma-patirūpaka Sutta & big Chedi (stupa) construction in contemporary Thai Buddhism

well yeah I tend to agree that its a bit misleading to say that by contributing to the building of a stupa is a momentously meritorious deed (dakkhina/velama sutta?) much less closing the 'doors to hell??' i mean it's 'caga' so its categorically kusala but it gets back to the whole 'good' but not bu...

Re: Local Florists in Thailand

hi, its a nice idea (the puppha/amisa puja) but I was wondering if it wouldn't be easier and even better if its done in a place in your own locality as ultimately all monasteries are the same... If you do it in the states It could provide a link to further developmemt of 'kusala' things such as kaly...

Re: Giving With One's Own Hand

interesting discussion and a good question, I remember reading somewhere in the suttas probably the book of the fives that the buddha aside from explicitly stating that you should give gifts with your own hand, you shouldn't give gifts causally..as a monk i noticed it makes a difference....I.e if th...

Re: Alms-giving to what seems like a corrupt temple in my city

from what i've seen the dana system is a double edged sword, ideally its perfect, the laity get the opportunity to develop 'kusala dhamma's' and the samanas can uae it to develeop 'indriya samvara'. But as always it gets back to how its done, the intentions and mind states on both sides determines t...
