Sappaya..supportive conditions

In the Visuddhi magga there is a section describing 9? Sappaya (supportive conditions) does any one have a direct reference, I can't seem to locate it. It includes things like, weather, people, seclusion, have you ever personally found a place that has all or most of such conditions? Where is the be...

Cīvara ala kāsāva

Ajegucchaṃ vimuttehi, surattaṃ arahaddhajaṃ; Jigucchissanti kāsāvaṃ, odātesu samucchitā. They’ll love white clothes, And they’ll detest the deep-dyed ochre robe, The banner of the arahants, Which is worn without disgust by the free. Th 17.1 Not sure how the deep dyed is inferred there but anyways I ...

Indeed....dāruṇo bhikkhave lābhasakkārasiloko kaṭuko pharuso antarāyiko....Bhikkhus, dreadful are gain, honour, and praise, bitter, vile, obstructive But to give the thread some balance before the diṭṭhis go any further in the direction of dosa, may I/we express mudita for the almost 20 years in rob...

Re: Root of Piti

Oh I see, modanā for being one of the pioneers of the Western Saṅgha, oh really grade 3? We'll to be honest my written Thai isn't that great as people always comment that it's hilarious to read, so I may just have the grammar and spelling of a equivalent three year old Thai kid and may not pass beca...

Re: Simple Pali chants and where to learn them?

Where to learn them? We'll ideally in a monastery but actually its good to have an idea of the different styles and text's before you go, and even better have them memorized. That's how you I guess would learn nowdays, YouTube and repetition, as due to distance and other factors do not always provid...

Re: International Pali Conference October 2019

Depending on what sectorial means it looks either quite interesting or a bit drabb, I'm inferring that the question pertains to (what are the differences in the different schools of the theravada tradition) not all Buddhist traditions, or it wouldn't just be pāḷi discourse? I think at previous confe...

Re: Root of Piti

Hi Bhante yes, I'm guessing it must be some Thai commentary from the นักธรรม literature maybe? As that is where most of the pariyatti comes from with some individuals maybe going to Lp B.dasa's or the Siam rath translations? Idk, I actually thought of doing it this year as I'm back in Thailand and t...

Root of Piti

Hi, there is a text from somewhere that mentions four parts of the sāsana, puggala, Dhamma, vatthu and piti, the last one is ceremony, I haven't been able to get a hit on the etymology, any leads? Or is it just pīti as rapture but has a meaning that has morphed to ceremony? Guess so, how unsatisfact...

Structural engineer anyone?

Anumodana if the administration let this fly... In the topic of Dhamma-propogation & the 'dasa puñña kiriya vatthu' also I guess there is a hidden phenomenon or subject of buildings (sāsana dhammā / teachings, sāsana puggala / people's , sāsana piti / ceremonies and not last but least...sāsana vatth...

Re: Source of mudita "ma laddhasampattito vigacchantu" chant ???

For mudita its normally this... When he has gone forth, he dwells pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, likewise the second quarter, the third quarter, and the fourth quarter. Thus above, below, across, and everywhere, and to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire...

Re: Where in the vinaya is the prohibition against monks asking for gifts/offerings?

So hypothetically speaking, what would you -as laymen- think is the best course of action -for a monastic- if they are in a situation where there is need of some requisite and neither of those conditions are present?

Sutta quotes to support the idea to live is good

..Sāriputta, when one lays down this body and takes up a new body, then I say one is blameworthy. This did not happen in the case of the bhikkhu Channa; the bhikkhu Channa used the knife blamelessly.”M144 Can you think of any sutta quotes that support the idea to stay alive is a good thing? The reas...
