Re: Is there are really complete chanting book in english?

The continuous chanting style is called 'samyot' in Thai and 'gaṇa-sajjhāyana' in singhala, its the opposite of the typical Thammayut style which is more stop start, I agree there isn't as of yet a really complete chanting book in English, which is well partly because all communities have a slightly...

Appalachian trail hike

Hi everyone I had the idea to do a 'tudong' on the Appalachian trail in the north eastern part of the US, it's a long walk and would take a few months, I was wondering if anyone is in any of the states the trail passes through? They are.. Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, ...

I like the work for it's sutta references, I think translations will always be problematic, not sure i see papañca as being entrenched, i think if you papañca alot you definitely will become entrenched..here's...

Re: Pali vocabulary and examples

Here are Aj.Sujato's thoughts, the author is Venerable Varado "...Looking through his discussions, I find the results a little mixed. Choosing some terms more or less at random: agārasmā anagāriyaṃ: Both of us wished to emphasize the fact that this refers to the adoption of a renunciate lifestyle ra...

Teachers Fee

Im sure Tthere is whole thread on the topic of ‘lay Dharma teachers/Dharma books,’ but what about this, it’s from SN 7.14, it sounds like the brahmin is asking for a fee for someone else but in the end seems to be offering it to the Buddha (after having received a teaching)?! “…We brahmans, Master G...

Re: Disrobing defeat or progress?

I think one absolutely should remove oneself from toxic environments and unfortunate conditions even if it means disrobing. I also think it is better to be a good layman than a bad monk. A lay person may even be an Anagami whereas a bad monk may be headed to Niraya hell, i think it is obvious which...

Re: Disrobing defeat or progress?

Thank you all for your insightful answers. To be honest I used to look down on monks when they would disrobe, i guess being young and idealistic, i used to think anything is better than disrobing. But now having been a monk for over a decade, and having gone through or am going through a period of ...

Disrobing defeat or progress?

From the time of the Buddha until the present day there have been monastics disrobing as a result of a myriad of different reasons maybe. I remember as a junior monk one senior monk always used to say to us ‘its better to be a bad monk than a good layman.’ Meaning no matter what just make sure you d...

Re: Does Anyone Know

Does anyone hava a sutta name for this quote?

“What do you think about this?” said the Lord. “What is the purpose of a mirror?” “It is for the purpose of reflection, sir”, replied Rahula. “Even so, an action to be done by body, speech or mind should only be done after careful reflection.”
