Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Doesn't this give too much moral authority to the state over and above the Buddha's Dhamma? Let's say that I lived in a totalitarian state whose laws made it clear that the state owns all intellectual property, including the words of the Buddha (not a far fetched premise, given several 20th century...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

it would be fitting then if i knew the origin of adinnaṃ like if it comes from a sutta, like did something happen for that to be lain down as a rule Adinnādāna , "taking what is not given", is the standard Buddhist term for what we call stealing. It occurs 385 times in the Tipiṭaka, so you really d...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Interesting thread, I'm definitely more weary of infringing copyright after reading it! However I cannot say I agree that it violates the precept on stealing - even if it is possibly unskillful as many have argued. Just wanted to share Venerable Sujato's blog post on this issue https://sujato.wordpr...

Re: Stoicism and Buddhism

I wouldn't be so hasty with this conclusion. Convergent evolution is totally possible as well. People said the same thing about Taoism and Buddhism but its pretty well established they developed independently for some time before influencing each other. I've never found Taoism to have similarities ...

Re: Stoicism and Buddhism

“It is likely that Buddhists had already reached Bactria in the third century B.C., when it was still ruled by the Greeks, for the Pali sources claim that a Greek called Yonadhammarakkhita [“ Yona ” as in Ionia] took part in the Ashokan missions. Further Buddhist missionaries probably travelled wes...

Re: Chan Buddhism

The Chinese Chan Buddhists are much more likely to refer to the Agamas than the Japanese AFAIK. The Vietnamese too, possibility because of their closeness to Theravada countries (and the fact that there is Vietnamese theravada). Also Thich Nat Hahn is one of the few Zen folks I've seen actually cite...

Re: kundalini

Well, sure, as long as you realize these things are just inventions and have no basis in actual physiology. I've always thought that if certain mental perceptions or images help people with samadhi and so on, then why not use them. But I think that a lot of folks get really caught up in the whole en...

Re: Stoicism and Buddhism

Interesting, though, if for the stoics matter is conscious, then its pretty much something else altogether than what we would call "materialism" today, more like a neutral monism a la Russell. As for the Cynics, I'm not sure I see them as having a pratyekabuddha bent, after all, they saw themselves ...

Re: Advaya (undivided)

Perhaps Bhikkhu Nananada can shed some light on this: When eye becomes self conscious, it separates itself from forms, and these are the two ends. With these two ends as pegs, a measuring goes on which we call percepts, concepts and knowledge. But in this so-called knowledge, the duality is already ...

If the practitioner considers that the śakti is empty, does kuṇḍalinī become Buddhist? :sage: :spy: Is making something 'empty' all it takes to make something 'Buddhist'? :sage: :spy: :stirthepot: :anjali: Tibetan Buddhists practice a form of "Kundalini" which is Tummo, Sanskrit "Candali", lit: inn...

Re: Stoicism and Buddhism

Were they materialists really? I thought they were more like panpsychists. The logos is supposed to be also intelligent and rational as well as a fiery aether like stuff.

Anyways, I've always preferred the Cynics, they seem more like serious ascetics

Re: Sunlun Sayadaw method

Greetings Tilt, Over the years here I have seen Burmese Vipassana styles of practice criticized variously much along the same lines as the Sunlun practice is being criticized in this thread, as not being in line with the suttas and commentaries. Yes, and whilst this remains a "General Theravāda Med...

Re: Sunlun Sayadaw method

Greetings Javi, You're just redoing the same argument from the last page retro Maybe because it's right, and if I had the time to go hunting through the suttas, I could find even more to substantiate this position? Then do so. It is a preliminary practice to increase mindfulness ...with no basis wh...
