Re: New book by Y. Karunadasa

Those are a lot of heavy hitters in Buddhist studies it seems, its making me want to buy it myself. Also, not sure if it is a new book, or a new edition or printing. It seems like the book has been around for awhile https://www.buddhistdoor.net/features/early-buddhist-teachings-the-middle-position-i...

‘I’ without ‘I am’: On the Presence of Subjectivity in Early Buddhism, in the Light of Transcendental Phenomenology Khristos Nizamis Investigating the Pāli suttas, compiled prior to the development of Abhidhamma, from a phenomenological perspective reveals an internally coherent and consistent doctr...

Re: HHDL on Interdialog Between Theravadin & Tibetan Buddhists

That would be pretty cool.

Just an FYI if you search UN Vesak on youtube there are various videos from the recent events (2018, 2017), including keynote speeches, etc.

Re: Does Theravada have a practice similar to Tonglen in Mhayana?

Loving kindness meditation is similar, in that there is the same radiation of goodness out to all beings. However, there is no instruction to take in the bad.

Re: The Idea of the Historical Buddha

Much ado about nothing He's right that most claims about the Buddha are mythical and that there is no solid historical evidence for the historical figure, but none of this is new, as his quoting of Lamotte shows Ultimately, the Dhamma is the Dhamma, whether or not the academy can establish historici...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Doesn't this give too much moral authority to the state over and above the Buddha's Dhamma? Let's say that I lived in a totalitarian state whose laws made it clear that the state owns all intellectual property, including the words of the Buddha (not a far fetched premise, given several 20th century...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

it would be fitting then if i knew the origin of adinnaṃ like if it comes from a sutta, like did something happen for that to be lain down as a rule Adinnādāna , "taking what is not given", is the standard Buddhist term for what we call stealing. It occurs 385 times in the Tipiṭaka, so you really d...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Interesting thread, I'm definitely more weary of infringing copyright after reading it! However I cannot say I agree that it violates the precept on stealing - even if it is possibly unskillful as many have argued. Just wanted to share Venerable Sujato's blog post on this issue https://sujato.wordpr...

Re: Stoicism and Buddhism

I wouldn't be so hasty with this conclusion. Convergent evolution is totally possible as well. People said the same thing about Taoism and Buddhism but its pretty well established they developed independently for some time before influencing each other. I've never found Taoism to have similarities ...

Re: Stoicism and Buddhism

“It is likely that Buddhists had already reached Bactria in the third century B.C., when it was still ruled by the Greeks, for the Pali sources claim that a Greek called Yonadhammarakkhita [“ Yona ” as in Ionia] took part in the Ashokan missions. Further Buddhist missionaries probably travelled wes...
