Re: Buddhism before Theravada

What if, a long time ago, someone had misunderstood dhamma and misinterpreted it ? (may be Buddagosha) What if we all are following that misunderstandings ? Like Tilt said to me once when I was following similar sentiments, Buddhaghosa is an easy target. IOW, Peacock's shallow on this. Did you, or ...

Re: Buddhism before Theravada

Following is full part where Dr. Peacock talks about kalama sutta, I think earlier one posted by 'Javi' is not giving the full picture. "Particularly in Western Buddhism so many times the Kalama sutta is cited as being really good and then people say 'go and believe in rebirth' - The Kalama sut...

..... Particularly in Western Buddhism many times the Kalama sutta is cited as being really good and then people say 'go and believe in rebirth' - The Kalama sutta for those of you who don't know is the one where the Buddha basically says "don't believe a word I say cause I said it" This ...

Re: Birthmarks and Reincarnation

Hi CJ Have you read this interview with Ian Stevenson? http://whitecrows.davidsmuse.co.uk/ian-stevenson-omni-interview/ Omni: Your new book discusses some misconceptions about the idea of reincarnation. What is the most common? Stevenson: The idea that reincarnation must include what Hindus call Ka...

Re: Birthmarks and Reincarnation

Hi Yana, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's really amazing how this reincarnation works isn't it? You still get a pain from a previous life, wow. Even I was amazed by Dr. Stevenson's research finding that you can get marks or anomalies from previous life's. One can explain all these...

Re: Birthmarks and Reincarnation

There's no way to verify those cases where folks reported experiences from non-human realms and so they probably got eliminated from the candidate list for investigation. It's kinda tough to verify someone's claim that s/he used to be a deva ruling from above... Even-though I haven't heard...

Re: John Peacock: Will the Real Buddha Please Stand Up?

Hi, Is there any Arahat today? I haven't came across anyone. If there are not, then can it be because we have messed up real Buddhist teachings somewhere, somehow? Can it be that because people are practicing on inaccurate teachings they are not attaining Arahat(-ship)? I had posted following questi...

Re: Buddhism before Theravada

I just listen to it, very interesting indeed. But it has 2 more parts as Metta as a Path to Awakening Part 1 & 2. http://www.audiodharma.org/series/207/talk/2603/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Do you know any forum/website where I can ask few questions from John Peacoc...

Re: John Peacock

I tend to use my own brain and read the books and think a bit, and make up my own mind. Instead of relying on what John Peacock thinks. But good luck, anyway. Thanks for the reply. John Peacock has like 40 years of practice/experience in Buddhism, and I'm not even 40 yet  So I guess I can us...

John Peacock

Hi, Does anyone know a forum/website where I can ask few questions from John Peacock. I searched the web but could not find any such place. So I thought about asking this community where I learned about him. As he is neutral about reincarnation, I want to know his opinion on Dr. Ian Stevenson's rese...

Re: Science

Is there anything in the Pali Canon that would now seem redundant due to scientfic evidence proving that the teaching is obsolete? Yes, one such example is Agganna Sutts(DN 27 http://dharmafarer.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2.19-Agganna-S-d27-piya.pdf" onclick="window.open(thi...

Re: Potthapada Sutta Vs Agganna Sutta

In DN 27, the Buddha basically tells a story about the beginning of life on this world to two brahmins that, in the end, is used to illustrate how the way to liberation is beyond caste and lineage. Looking at the context, I happen to agree with Prof. Gombrich that this sutta is a lively and ingenio...

Re: Potthapada Sutta Vs Agganna Sutts

The first sutta is what the Buddha seriously thinks in my opinion and the second sutta is allegory. I think John Peacock thinks the Buddha is making jokes in the agganna sutta. Yes, John Peacock has a good explanation about all this. He had look for answers for the same question that I have, and I ...
