Re: Genocide in Burma: Monks and Perpetuation of Violence

Sometimes we make act violently or even feel it is appropriate to act violently. We may even think that we a doing it for the greater good but what we can never do is use the Buddha to justify or give legitimacy to our actions. Almost never, there are one or two exceptions even to this rule. His Ho...

Re: “Skillful Means” and the rhetoric of Mahāyāna proselytis

Water in a red glass, water in a blue glass...for my part I cannot separate out Theravada from Mahayana, they appear indistinguishable. The only time that I think of them separately is when I am speaking with those who make an issue of perceived differences.

Re: Genocide in Burma: Monks and Perpetuation of Violence

You are far "better off" being savagely murdered with a compassionate mind than surviving longer with a vicious one. If necessary, I would kill to defend myself and my family, as well as innocents such as small children, monks and nuns. Afterwards I would sponsor a temple to say prayers f...

Re: Do you agree with the Dalai Lama?

What is Buddhism in brief? My understanding is negligable, but what I personally hold to is the ideal of an open heart, of boundless love. Buddha taught us that we have been tricked into an state of bondage which is in truth no more real than a dream or a fairy castle. We must steadfastly tame the ...

Re: Do you agree with the Dalai Lama?

Mahayana say that there is no suffering, no cause, no cessation, and no way - it's a contradition to Buddha's teaching. Vajrayna have wrong view and wrong motivation, so there is wrong speach, action, livelihood, striving, mindfulness, concentration, fruit and liberation. Many of maha-vajrayana pra...

Re: Do you agree with the Dalai Lama?

I dont think that vajrayana and Dalai Lama are buddhism. If I wrote that I would be banned, for making a ridiculous and unsubstantiated remark. I might secretly believe that you are a lobster, but I wouldn't post it on the world wide web. Dalai Lama also say that lying is not so bad. When? Also i t...

Re: Can the Theravada Bhikkhuni Order be Re-established?

Bhikkhuni re-establishment has very little to do with textual sources and everything to do with acceptance, in Asia. A Great Buddhist Council, involving all traditions of Buddhism, could achieve this quickly, but otherwise the only option is very slow and incremental progress, as in the case of Sri ...

Re: Do you agree with the Dalai Lama?

The article is distorted and largely incorrect. It is true that Westerners often have a view of Buddhism coloured by their own requirements (scientific, pacifistic etc.), however Buddhism is beyond question a religion of peace. There are one or two circumstances in which one can kill but they are ex...

Re: Nine blasts in Bodhgaya this morning: terror attack?

you are saying that the myanmarese government, the south east asian delegates for the 8th global conference in buddhism and most of the established media companies including bbc, cnn & ap, all got it wrong because this is just a land grab issue between 2 groups of people, who so happen to be, i...

Re: Tulku system in Theravada buddhism?

In any Buddhist country if an infant starts mysteriously reciting Buddhist texts and acting like a monk then their parents will take them to a monastery. It is simply that the Tibetans made an active effort to identify such children. As for predicting exactly where one will be reborn that is another...

I must belong to the 5% then because I have yet to see any evidence of '...violent treatment of Muslims at the hands of people claiming to be Buddhists.' Arakanese and Bangladeshis fighting over land certainly, and that is very regretable. However, the idea that the problems in Burma are about a con...

Re: Monks in private jets pass test

The Thai media is full of monk scandals at the moment, but what really cuts me is the murder of ecology monks (phra nak anuraksa) by the Thai military who resent their obstruction of illegal logging. These reports almost never appear in the Thai media due to censorship. I'm told that the preferred m...
