Re: Dhamma Gems

Lastly a verse summation: Energetic and heedful in his tasks, Wisely administering his wealth, He lives a balanced life, Protecting what he has amassed. Endowed with faith and virtue too, Generous he is and free from avarice; He ever works to clear the path That leads to weal in future life. Thus to...

Re: Dhamma Gems

More of Buddha's advice to lay people, this time on their spiritual future: Four conditions, Vyagghapajja, conduce to a householder's weal and happiness in his future life. Which four? The accomplishment of faith (saddha-sampada), the accomplishment of virtue (sila-sampada), the accomplishment of ch...

Re: Dhamma Gems

Indeed we should not be friendly with evil doers....we should shun them.....but the question is should we just ignore them or should we actively try to convince other people to be unfriendly towards them and to shun them? chownah The passage has to do with protecting one's material wealth. If we ar...

Re: Dhamma Gems

"The wealth thus amassed, Vyagghapajja, has four sources of destruction: "(i) Debauchery, (ii) drunkenness, (iii) gambling, (iv) friendship, companionship and intimacy with evil-doers. "Just as in the case of a great tank with four inlets and outlets, if a man should close the inlets and open the o...

Re: Dhamma Gems

What is balanced livelihood?

Herein, Vyagghapajja, a householder knowing his income and expenses leads a balanced life, neither extravagant nor miserly, knowing that thus his income will stand in excess of his expenses, but not his expenses in excess of his income.

What is good friendship? Herein, Vyagghapajja, in whatsoever village or market town a householder dwells, he associates, converses, engages in discussions with householders or householders' sons, whether young and highly cultured or old and highly cultured, full of faith (saddha), full of virtue (s...

What is the accomplishment of watchfulness? Herein, Vyagghapajja, whatsoever wealth a householder is in possession of, obtained by dint of effort, collected by strength of arm, by the sweat of his brow, justly acquired by right means — such he husbands well by guarding and watching so that kings wo...

Favorite pithy quotes from the canon: "Four conditions, Vyagghapajja, conduce to a householder's weal and happiness in this very life. Which four? "The accomplishment of persistent effort (utthana-sampada), the accomplishment of watchfulness (arakkha-sampada), good friendship (kalyanamittata) and ba...

If one opts out of the News subforum that percentage is:
0
Never mind noble Will who is saving his soul from the ravages of contention, what about the others?

I bet the percentage of posts in News is more than 12% of all DW posts over a month period.

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

DNS: I see there are currently about 89 active topics over the last 7 days. Eleven of these topics are in the News sub-forum, so about 12% of all topics. The vast majority of topics are in the other sub-forums on various Dhamma topics; meditation, jhanas, precepts, etc. What about number of posts, ...

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

First choice would be for David to evaporate the News-Events-Politics forum. There are vast numbers of online & other media for that.

But I fear he will not - so the other option is for all of us to not post there at all.

Re: How much happy are you?

For whatever reason, perhaps lacking ambition or too stolid a character, contentment seems an adequate attitude.

So I did not vote.

Re: 'The illusion of free will' by Sam Harris is a dangerous idea, but can anyone disprove it?

It runs counter to what the Buddha taught, and furthermore, it could lead some people to stop making an effort to improve themselves, since according to Harris that effort, too, is predetermined, and whether you try or not, won't change what is already preordained to occur. Yet despite my revulsion...

Re: Theosophy

Thanks Will for sharing. By the way, are the teachings from prominent thesophy figures totally consistent with each other, was there instances when their insights contradict with each other and they went seperate ways or debate with one another? Your questions sound rhetorical. Do a little online s...

Did Madame Blavatsky taught chakras?
Not really - she mentioned their existence, but not much else.
Is it correct to say that leadbeater is the one expanded on it?

This time of year giving is emphasized. Here is a little from the Jewish tradition on Giving:
