Greetings Will,

:thanks:

Yes, the "connection" aspect is primary. Where it is not, there is Dharma Paths.

Metta,
Paul. :)
Then clarify by changing second sentence to: "What can we learn from our connections to other traditions, religions and philosophies?

Re: Signs of Kali Yuga

Greetings Will, As I mentioned in a previous post I have not seen anything brought here that shows a connection between kali yuga and theravada. Is there one?.....and if so can you describe it? chownah The second sentence describing this Connections forum says: "What can we learn from other traditi...

Re: Signs of Kali Yuga

Although the 'standard' length of the kali yuga time cycle is over 400,000 years, there have been other interpretations. This a long article surveying the many ways and complexities involved in this study. The author Bibhu Dev Misra finally settles on a much shorter cycle of 3000 years, for each of ...

I am not dismissing you, so go on and tell us what you know and clarify what you wish.

Just recall that this is a public forum, not you & I alone swapping views. Others are here and they deserve to learn from you as much as I.

So carry on - on this thread or any other you like.

Re: Signs of Kali Yuga

Yet all is not dark in Kali Yuga for those who forth just a little aspiration toward virtue. As the Great One Vyasa explains in the Vishnu Purana , book 6, ch. 2: We [Munis] heard you say, 'Excellent is the Kali age! Well done, Súdra! Well done, women!' Now we are desirous to know why this was said,...

Re: Signs of Kali Yuga

-If "Kali Yuga" began roughly 5.000 years ago, it means the Buddha Gotama arose in a "Dark period". So its far from being entirely dark. Regards. The Axial Age not only produced Buddha, but Moses, Plato, Pythagoras, Lao Tzu, Confucius, Adi Shankara, Jesus & others. It is only dark for the masses wh...

Re: Signs of Kali Yuga

The yugas as presented in the Bhagavatam, for example, give specific numbers of years for each of the four. So while an time-less psychological interpretation is possible, blaming bad translations & bad motives of same, is too speculative for me. Here is a detailed look at the subject from the Greek...

Is Kali Yuga mentioned in the Suttas or only in Hindu scriptures?
Probably only in Indian texts; Buddhism & Jainism use a repeating series of four kappas (kalpas). But the time span differs from the Yugas.

Signs of Kali Yuga

This world has cycles of degeneration as well as Golden Ages. It is plain we are now not in a Golden Age as Plato called it. Here is a little list from the Indian tradition, giving the vice-ridden character that is growing in power over many. Kali Yuga began roughly 5000 years ago & is supposed to l...

Re: Abhidhamma Resources

Here is an almost identical translation (by the late Gelongma) of the Abhidharmasamuccaya of Rahula-Boin. http://www.fairfun.net/my3/panna_my/b%20buddhism/PDFe-Books/Abhidharmasamuccaya-Col-Asanga_WalpolaRahula.pdf I like Asanga's approach with short definitions. The section on the Four Truths is al...

Re: Temple Seating

Yeah the monks are looking at the Buddha's back or quarter profile. The talk was aimed primarily at the other people. The monks will probably have their eyes closed anyway, listening carefully to everything the Buddha says. I wonder if that arrangement is still practiced in some Theravada temples? ...

Re: Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright

I have not read the book, so may be too harsh. But if one believes in only one lifetime and meditation makes life bearable, what would motivate them to "delve more into the Buddhist - religion concepts and practices."? I suppose there could be a myriad of ways. Here's some I just thought of: 1. One...

Temple Seating

Having read both Walshe's & Story's translations of this passage, ( Mahaparinibbana ) I am still puzzled: 22. And the Blessed One got ready, and taking his bowl and robe, went to the council hall together with the company of bhikkhus. After rinsing his feet, the Blessed One entered the council hall ...
