Re: Is it strange to oppose the Lotus Sutra but be ok with the Pureland Sutras?

Is it strange for someone who holds a sort of Theravada position (but with a soul) to completely oppose the blasphemy of the Lotus Sutra in saying Buddha told pretty lies for 40 years and then finally taught Mahayana on his death-bed. But to not oppose another Mahayana Sutra, like the Pureland Sutr...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

celebrate with hookers and cocaine :woohoo: (just kidding) I mean if you're just with the hookers and cocaine, not partaking in either, then you're good. Like, "Hey I'm just having this party to point out the fact that I don't need either of these things to make me happy." At that point the hookers...

Re: Trying to introduce an abusive alcoholic father to weed?

Yes, the self-reflection it can induce and therapeutic effects were what had sparked this idea. Mostly for his own good, he should see and acknowledge his flaws and the horrible karma he generates through his actions.. But perhaps it might make things worse as Aloka said, and give him another form ...

Re: Trying to introduce an abusive alcoholic father to weed?

Its the safer alternative and from my experience also makes you to self reflect and see the flaws in one's character on a deeper level. From a strict Buddhist view both of them should be avoided but I can't denounce the therapeutic effects.

Re: The 3rd precept for lay person

Are whoremongers always destined for lower rebirth? From Snp 1.6: Buddha Sehi dārehi asantuṭṭho Vesiyā supadussati ; Dussati paradāresu, Taṃ parābhavato mukhaṃ Unsatisfied with his own wife, with others’ wives he’s seen in tow, corrupted too with prostitutes— that’s the way to disaster’s woe. https...

What about prostitutes?
They are best avoided. You don't know where they have been, and some may be married.

However, see the story of Ambapāli.
Agreed but does it break 3rd precept if they are not married? Are whoremongers always destined for lower rebirth?

Re: The 3rd precept for lay person

From the Siṅgāla Suttaṃ “Killing, stealing, telling lies, and committing adultery ³ are never praised by the wise. ³ Committing adultery. Literally, “Going to the wives of others (paradāragamanañceva). Sexual misconduct (kāmesumicchācāra) means literally “Misconduct in sensual pleasures,” but the m...

Re: SN25.1-10 Good news!! Many of us in this forum are assured stream entry!

Stream enterer is as rare as the ability to split hair with an arrow. Could you give the Sutta support for this? What Buddha said was as far as there are people who follow the Noble Eightfold Path there will not be lack of Arahants in this world. https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn56/sn5...

From the link:
"adultery with multiple women, some of whom are sex workers, took place over the past four years. The outcome was extended relationships with a group of about ten women. "
That explains the "dasa" bit of his name, then.

Mahayana/vajrayana is chock full of them. They have been useful to me and are especially good for those with a busy lifestyle. Not everyone can live like a monk unfortunately.
