If the monastic in the video isn't Theravadin then this belongs in "Connections...". Let me know if I should move it.
Please move
Thanks

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

I agree however that if one intends to ordain at a place, it makes sense to agree with the main teacher's interpretation or at least listen to his instructions. Otherwise one isn't really taking him as one's teacher. I think finding a right teacher is the biggest hurdle of being a monk. More you kn...

Re: Are we in this earth to attain Nirvana?

This is a very old post.
I always thought that all sentients are striving for Nibbana.

Re: What is the difference between the Theravada and Mahayana concepts of Buddhahood?

Buddhism does not reject the existence of god and god like qualitis.
Nibbana is beyond even the god-like state according to Sutta.
I actually heard Ven. Getsunma is giving a talk to that effect.

Re: Why speech ceased in first Jhana?

giving up the grosser posture, he takes up the more refined one.
Good point.
But It won't tell whether you can't be in first Jhana when you are walking.
I am not sure whether there is a refined speech.

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

Mainly because even the best places in Sri Lanka are overly influenced by the Abhidhamma and commentaries.
]
This is surprising . What is the reason for it?
Why do they give less emphasis to Sutta?

Why speech ceased in first Jhana?

Considering the fact the First Jhana comprise of Vitakka, Vicara (wholesome) I can not understand why speech has to be ceased in first Jhana.

Kiri Amma Dana - Sri Lanka

Kiri Amma Dana - Sri Lanka Just for your interest I like to share the following video. Some Sri Lankans prefer to give food to animals and old women instead of monks. Generally they give this to dogs and crows. Kiri Amma means the step mother or the mother who give milk in absence of the birth mothe...

Na Uyana food is so good that I've heard of monks staying there just for that.
I hope they will graduate to the next level one day.

Re: in my opinion the buddha knew science and technology

I think Buddha's biggest science and technology discovery is the realisation of Anatta and Nibbana.
Many of us still do not comprehend what it is.

Re: Inaccurate knowledge can damage the seeker of truth

Agree.
The only way you can confirm Buddha's true teaching is in practice.
If you think your suffering (Dukkha) is reduced what you are practicing then you are on the right path.
For this, you have to fully comprehend what Dukkha means.

Re: Bundles of reeds simile.

This sounds Mahayana or Nāgārjuna. It's not what is found in the Pali. In the Pali, DO is called "the wrong way" or "the wrong path".
With the little knowledge I have, I felt that Mahayana Buddha is a dependently originated phenomena.
