Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

Aren't fictions lies? In the commentaries one piece of fiction, the Rāmayāna's story of the kidnapping of Sitā by Rāvaṇa, is used as the stock example of frivolous speech, not false speech. Mahasi Sayadaw, when expounding frivolous speech in his talks on the Sallekha Sutta cites this commentarial d...

Re: Dhamma Gems

Favorite pithy quotes from the canon: "Four conditions, Vyagghapajja, conduce to a householder's weal and happiness in this very life. Which four? "The accomplishment of persistent effort (utthana-sampada), the accomplishment of watchfulness (arakkha-sampada), good friendship (kalyanamittata) and b...

Re: Dhamma Gems

Every time when reading reaches the final part of this sutta, tears of joy is running down my cheeks ... Then the Blessed One exclaimed: "So you really know, Kondañña? So you really know?" And that is how Ven. Kondañña acquired the name Añña-Kondañña — Kondañña who knows. SN 56.11  Yes. I se...

Re: Those Self-Absorbed Buddhists

[“People seemed so self-absorbed.”/quote] Perhaps meditation should start after the discussion of "News, current events, and politics"! :D Keeping the joke aside, I think this is the situation in Sri Lankan temples too. Men hardly go to temples as it seems it is boring to go to temples. Many women ...

But we tell stories to a child.
Stories are not advertised as truth, but as fiction. Santa (for instance) is advertised as truth, which is deceitful.
Aren't fictions lies?

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

So the tendency (anusaya) to lie & accept lies will not distort the capacity of a child, including into adulthood, to discern what is logical, coherent, true & real.
But we tell stories to a child.

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

I am mainly concern about things like white lies.
Lies there is no great harm.
Something like telling a small child that Santa will come through the Chimini.

Why telling lie is so bad?

I think generally we all lie to some extent. Politicians, sales people, business people name a few. Some times we lie to the employer when we need to take a day off. Then there is so called white lies. But according to Buddha they all bad. Why? This king’s bull-elephant has thrown away his life, the...

Re: Stephen Batchelor's “After Buddhism.” Yale University Press, 2015

Batchelors "Buddhism" has seemed to me to be an admixture of mostly materialism and sour grapes. Which is what many of us came to Buddhism seeking to remedy. Rather than seeking a way to see beyond the cage that his culture and education have built for him, he is trying to convince the rest of us o...

Re: Is it possible to practice Brahama Vihara without reaching the fourth Jhana?

I think mastering jhana before BV represents saving oneself before trying to save or help others. But my understanding is that Metta is about saving yourself: one should protect one's "universal goodwill" (translation per TB) like a mother protects an only child so one will not create unwholesome k...

Re: POLL: How much do you meditate?

Hi Lucas
Good link.
However, there is another Sutta to show how to light a fire.
You have to make sure that the fire stick is not wet.
It also a gradual training.
Not every person can light a fire without some experience.

Re: Is Nibbana cessation of being?

Two options that come to mind are "satta" or "bhava" - Bhava = 10th nidana & Satta = 11th nidana. Satta found in SN 23.2 And what, bhikkhus, is birth? The birth of the various beings (sattānaṃ) into the various orders of beings (sattanikāye), their being born, descent, production from the manifesta...

Re: Is Nibbana cessation of being?

Thanks, Paul I think you are correct. When you gave me the lead I could trace that to Pali Sutta. It is Bhavanirodho. >Ye pana te bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃvādino evaṃdiṭṭhino: ‘atthi sabbaso bhavanirodho’ti, sace tesaṃ bhavataṃ samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṃ saccaṃ vacanaṃ, ṭhānametaṃ vijjati—yaṃ diṭṭheva dh...

But as to the recluses and brahmins who hold the doctrine and view “there definitely is a cessation of being,” if their word is true then it is possible that I might here and now attain final Nibbāna. https://suttacentral.net/en/mn60 Is Nibbana a cessation of being? and also Is cessation means annih...

Re: Is it possible to practice Brahama Vihara without reaching the fourth Jhana?

It seems that Buddha wanted to differentiate the BV practice by the average householder and the recluse. It appears that BV should be practiced in conjunction with the four Jhanas to qualify for Noble Eightfold Path. "And what are the six kinds of household equanimity? The equanimity that arises whe...
