Re: Want to explore ordination but...

[Lately I have been slipping back in to old worldly habits i.e. thinking sex, relationships, booze, food can make me happy, but I just end up as dis-satisfied as I was before (surprise, surprise!)k/quote] This can happen even if you become a monk. Start ppp Practicing eight precepts before become a...

Re: Ideas, emptiness, etc.

The suttas say 'speech' ceases in the 1st jhana therefore it seems the type of thinking (vaci sankhara) that creates speech also ceases in the 1st jhana:
Good point.

so the Theravada craft is that of mental development.
Agree.
Tea ceremonies etc are just rituals.
I do not think they will get you anywhere except some mental calm.

:goodpost: Garrib
Surprisingly Japanese have taken this perfecting a craft to the highest level.
You can see this in every aspect of their lives.
Customer service, running the transport system with only one-second variation, geisha women etc.

Re: Neurological vs Psychological

So if this whole dukkha thing (and other philosophical ideas) are explained neurologically, then what is samsara or nibanna? Wouldn't they also be irrelevant? There are four noble truths and Dukkha is the first one. Science does not teach the other three which are the most important. Buddha's solut...

Re: Buddhism and alcohol

Question is, to live with pain, mental illness, or die young with some joy? As Buddhist we believe: Life is suffering. Not only you, we all are in some form of pain. We all have some form of mental illness unless you are an Arahant. Death is not the solution as we are reborn. So we have to go throu...

Re: What is Nibbana?

It is not possible to understand Nibbana by words.
You have to become a practicing monk at least to get a taste of Nibbna.
However, Sotapanna also has some idea about the Nibbana.

Re: What is Nibbana?

I would say "after death"
Which means you know what Nibbna in this life isn't it?
Then Nibbana after death is the same as the Nibbana while you alive except there is no five aggregate.

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

Do you agree with Wikholm that, “meditation was primarily designed not to make us happier, but to destroy our sense of individual self."
The way I understand Samatha meditation is for the pleasant abiding here and now and Vipassna meditation for the destroying taints.

Re: Is Rohingya the Ealam of Myanmar?

Rohingya have little support. I don't think so. There is a very active force behind it. The new wave of refugee crisis started as a result of terrorist (freedom fighters) killing some Myanmar soldiers. This is what exactly happened in Sri Lanka too. The refugee crisis is a blessing in disguise for ...

self view vs conceit i want to know if i got it correct thx Self-view is eradicated by Sotapanna. (You understand that there is a continuation of life in Samsara due to causes and conditions but there is no soul (the notion that there is I me or myself) but the accumulation of the five aggregate) T...
