Re: What is Vitakka, Avitakka and Savitakka according to Sutta?

once it has been successfully retained it is savitakka ( fixed thought) It appears this is the understanding of some Sri Lankan teachers. But there is not Sutta support for this. The way I understand it Vitakka is the noun and Savitakka is the adjective. I am waiting for an answer from Ven. Dhamman...

Re: What is Vitakka, Avitakka and Savitakka according to Sutta?

At the 4th stage the mind is fixed ( savitakka) on a single object or thought.
The way I understand the Vitakka and Savitakka are the same meaning.

The most important precept is the one which at the time you are tempted to breach.

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

All five precepts should be practiced in tandem. You may not kill but you can make someone's life miserable to a point s/he wish for the death. There are people who do not consume alcohol but they still can involve in heinous crimes. Right mindfulness (free from alcohol) required for the understandi...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

:goodpost: What I am saying is what those documents contains are Buddha's teaching but may be compiled in a different way. Even the Suttas are not what literally said by the Buddha. Sutta are also a tabulation or a compilation. An example of being compiled differently and expanded on is dispassion,...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

Greetings Sarath, My understanding is they both contain Buddha's teaching. (say 99%) Do you mean that 99% of what is said in these sources was literally said by the Buddha, and that the elders compiled additional content from the Blessed One which had been omitted from the suttas, for whatever reas...

Re: What is Vitakka, Avitakka and Savitakka according to Sutta?

A very popular monk (Walasmulle Abhaya) in Sri Lanka teaches like this. Is this incorrect? This appears incorrect. How do you rectify it? Its appears correct but unnecessary. Have a closer look. It seems incorrect. This is how it should be the way I understand. First Jhana = Savitakka (Vitakka), Sa...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

The real question is whether the teaching of Abhidhamma and Visuddhi Magga contain the Buddha's teaching. My understanding is they both contain Buddha's teaching. (say 99%) This is no difference to Sutta. Even Sutta does not have 100% representation of what Buddha taught. I think those monks who dis...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

According to him, a sotapanna will let the child die
Will that monk do the same for himself?
Will he die without taking medicine if he got an infection due to worms?
This is not accordance with Buddha's teaching.

Are ten hours a day surfing the net shrink 10% of the key brain regions?

Are ten hours a day surfing the net shrink 10% of the key brain regions? Above statement is from the following video. What is the logic behind it? If I spent ten hours a day surfing the net to understand the Buddha's teaching how it reduces my brain function? https://youtu.be/C6n4v-SZnd4?list=PLbiIq...

What is Vitakka, Avitakka and Savitakka according to Sutta?

What is Vitakka, Avitakka and Savitakka according to Sutta?
And what is their relation to Jhana?
I appreciate if you can explain this in both Sutta jhana (four fold) and Abhidhamm (five fold) formula.

Re: How do I start out in the Theravada tradition?

I don't really know where to start. This is my standard recommendation for beginners: a)Read Buddhism course. (Take about 12 hours to read and give you a good idea about the teaching) http://www.urbandharma.org/pdf/PDF_BuddhismCourse/ b)Print a copy of this Dhamma Chart and refer to it while studyi...
