Re: Core teachings
What are the core teachings in Pali canon, which without will render the canon useless in terms of practice? Hi bachew There are many helpful formulas all over the suttas, like Four Noble Truths, Noble Eightfold Path, Dependent Origination, after the Buddha's 45 years of teaching, and it is easy fo...

Re: Is being a cook wrong livelihood?
Is being a cook wrong livelihood? Only if you're a bad cook. :stirthepot: But in order to graduate from culinary school, I would have to cook meat as well. Is this considered wrong livelihood to cook the meat? What if I can't find a job at a vegetarian restaurant and have to cook meet for a living?...

Re: Reasonable involvement in "World Issues"
Hi I like to be well informed what is going on around us, from various sources (like russian or middle-eastern too) as well as local ones. However, the best, most relieving meditation experience I had was when I completely and entirely switched off all in-fluences that could stir up the mind except ...

Re: Voluntary Euthanasia
My main concern, is that old people who are very ill and close to dying, but not in pain nor wishing to end their lives before the natural term, might feel pressured into doing it, to ease the financial and other burdens on their families. That kind of pressure would be no doubt be legislated again...

Re: Voluntary Euthanasia
Okay. So, there is never, ever a basis for euthanasia. The person who is in intractable pain, increasing out of control of his body, being subjected to mind numbing drugs, despite their wishes, must stay alive to die a natural, though prolonged, miserable death. No need to tilt. The question that c...

Re: Voluntary Euthanasia
what are your thoughts? How do you negotiate the ethical issues associated with either supporting or not supporting voluntary euthanasia? Hi. Not sure what 'voluntary' here is (and what involuntary euthanasia might look like). But everyone talks about euthanasia out of compassion. What about the po...

Today she went off to the Temple in Woking and just as we said goodbye she said today is a "big merit day" at the temple and as she said this she looked in the direction of my wallet on the table!! :jumping: My understanding of gaining merit was through general good deeds. For examp...

Re: Rebirth
It means quite literally what it says: that rebirth ends, means there is no more next birth. Hi reflection I don't agree. There literalism seems to neglect the Buddha's teaching on Dependent Origination and on compassion toward people. The usual phrase is "no more coming to any state of being....

Re: Phra Ajahn Mitsuo Gavesako leave the Buddhist monkhood?
As I understand it. If a person is sotapanna or sakadagami, will the person still leave monkhood? or is it only arahants who will never leave monkhood? Hi hermit. As I understand it. If a person is anagami (non-returner) he has abandoned the fetter of sensual desire (which is a main reason for disr...

Re: Why Theravada?
Pre-sectarian texts are non-Mahayana because they pre-date Mahayana. Furthermore, the Nikayas/Agamas aren't used by any Mahayana practitioner that I've ever spoken with - they seem to prefer Mahayana Sutras exclusively, and when these two textual groups are in conflict they tend to interpret the ea...

Re: Why Theravada?
As I recently discovered on the other DW, the mere hint that pre-sectarian texts predate & are not Mahayana texts is enough to drum up a defensive formation prior to clearing a room. Hi dave. Who says they're not Mahayana text? The Agamas/Nikayas are lost from the Tibetan Kangyur (canon) and ha...
