Re: HH Dalai or Aung San Suu Kyi - most famous Buddhist?

‘I wish to have nothing to do with fame, Nagita, nor let fame come upon me! Those who cannot easily attain this happiness of renunciation, this happiness of seclusion, this happiness of peace and enlightenment as I have obtained, let them enjoy this other base and indolent happiness, derived from ga...

HH Dalai or Aung San Suu Kyi - most famous Buddhist?

In a recent post there was a lot of interest in famous people who are Buddhists. Two of those are arguably the most famous but which one is number one? Both have compelling credentials but I would like to open a debate by putting the case for Aung San Suu Kyi based on these observations: Both have w...

Re: Super Famous Buddhists

I think the middle photo is Hayley Mills, John Mills daughter and who became famous in the role of Pollyanna in about 1960.

What about Aung San Su Chi, probably the most famous Buddhist in the world, male or female, and what a role model for the rest of us.

Re: Jhana Question

Yet i was also told, that to achieve jhana one must follow the tetrads. However i thought it was uneccessary to keep attention on whether the breath is short or long and other stuff like that. Maybe the Jhanas aren't as complicated as they make out. The first two levels involve discursive thought w...

Re: Guan-Yin, THE GODDESS OF METTA

I think Kuan Yin is very prominent in Vietnam. She is depicted as as a standing white lady Buddha always watching to sea. She is the protector of seamen and fishermen. Is this the same as the one you mention? We intend to buy a beautiful white marble statue of her and place her on a hill on our prop...

Re: Consciosness = Identification?

Well thought through. Our ignorance is of saccadhamma not just annatta: ‘And what is ignorance? Whatever exists in the absence of the understanding of suffering, the origin of suffering, the end of suffering and the way leading to the cessation of suffering is called ignorance, friends. (S.N. 12.2) ...

Re: The Buddha as "one who knows" in Thai tradition

To learn more about Poo Roo, or Poo Hoo and how Loom Por taught it have a good read of his "Collected Teachings". I fortunately had first hand experience with him. It really isn't so complicated and no need to think about it too much. It is a platform, an observation point in our meditation reached ...

Re: The Buddha as "one who knows" in Thai tradition

' Poo Hoo bor wah, Poo wah bor hoo' is a saying Loom Por Chah would often use in Lao, which was his native language. I'll put the translation underneath.
'The One who Knows doesn't say. The one who says, doesn't know.'

Re: Members Bios - please contribute yours

Thanks Ben That time in the Sangha laid a foundation for the rest of my life and made me a better person. I retained some valuable tools that have assisted in my working life. But that's not the end of it of course. I have a duty to give something back to the Sangha and honor the teacher with practi...

My life in the Sangha (also see http://www.fourwindslao.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) I was an angry, restless young man. I started to take stock of myself after the premature death of my older brother in 1975. I took a course at university on Comparative Religions of which Bud...
