Re: Discussion of Nuclear Power and Safety

Finally, do you like to insult people.....you take a reasonable post and you nit pick it to find some flaw and then you amplify what you see as a flaw into character assasination.....really you do...... chownah What it is that you are labeling a "reasonable post"? Speaking in the abstract and attac...

Re: Discussion of Nuclear Power and Safety

To anyone thinking that Kim raises points of concern please see my previous responses which already address the issues. If you think it is notable that estimated costs for a technology went up %50 in a few years according to one report then please investigate and report back to the group. I underst...

Re: Discussion of Nuclear Power and Safety

If the cost allowable problem solutions already existed then there would be no discussion even going on....the difference is that many people are short sighted or narrow minded enough to not realize that every indication...EVERY indication ...is that in the not so distant future there will be cost ...

Re: Why so few Western Buddhists?

Surely you jest. Most wars have been fought over power and wealth....in fact wars are almost exclusivly fought over power and wealth......"give me this piece of land as my control of it is necessary for harmony"..... Tomayto, tomahto. Are you saying that "harmony" and "power and wealth" are the sam...

Re: Zhuangzi and the Butterfly

In reading the tao te ching I think that referring to commentaries too much tends to blunt the meaning.....because a meaning which one finds through ones own thoughts and contemplations will benefit one best. The eternal tao brings forth the 10,000 things with names but is itself nameless.

Re: Discussion of Nuclear Power and Safety

I love solar PV because I've lived off-grid and want to do it again ... but my batteries cost more than my solar panels. And they still would even with the latest tech batteries. It's not that different in utility scale. This is the most ridiculous arguement that you have attempted recently. What d...

Re: Why so few Western Buddhists?

You say "because harmony is valued above everything else" when speaking of eastern culture....I dispute that statement. If harmony was valued above everything else then there would be no wars in eastern culture. If harmony was valued above everything else then there would be no quarrels in eastern ...

The most important precept is the one which at the time you are tempted to breach.

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

Here is an unscientific, unsupported, biased view: If you want to imagine the future of the middle east without some very sudden reduction of greenhouse gas emissions...think saudi arabia.....specifically the empty area. For an area to become empty like the empty area of saudi arabia you either have...

Problem: Refugee camp. Lots of people, all arrived recently and most arrived destitute, no infrastructure. What to do for electricity? Solution: cheap, quick, and can largely be build by unskilled labour. https://www.facebook.com/climatecouncil/videos/10157283632713438/  Kim Is there a...

You are the only want who seems to be trying to limit the discussion.....you seem to want to limit the discussion to certain things and you seem to be specifically trying to avoid the actual topic of this thread as stated in the title and as expressed in the original post.... Have you read Ven. Dha...

Re: Is Ganges river back flow in Varanasi?

The title of the thread is asking for common sense explanations.....the original post asks for common sense explanations.....now do you understand why people gave common sense explanations?....do you understand how come they did that? This is a Buddhist forum. We don't have to limit ourselves to co...

Because it is the topic of discussion for this thread....now do you understand how come they do that? As long as there exist alternative -- traditional, actually -- explanations of how come that bowl floated in the opposite direction, the scope of this topic is, obviously, wider than just trying to...

Re: Is Ganges river back flow in Varanasi?

I think the OP misunderstood the cleric and though that he was claiming that the river flowed "backward" here. A river flowing "backward" would carry the Buddha's bowl upstream. This still does not address the specification that the Buddha's bowl went against the stream of the river. It is an under...

Re: Is Ganges river back flow in Varanasi?

It is naive, lacking faith, asked in bad faith, dependent on the definition of "faith" in question. Perhaps this story is a parable. Some say this story is a symbol of Buddha going against the accepted practices on those days. Some would say that calling the story "a parable" is the same thing as s...

May benevolent Devas rejoice and share in all of our merits, and may they protect us and help us to succeed in our lives and in our practice. I have no problem whatsoever mentally reciting this kind of "prayer", and I don't think anyone else should either! :) If one sees reciting this prayer as bei...

Re: Why so few Western Buddhists?

I'd like to add to my list of interesting and relevant (at least I feel are relevant) Suttas, basically all of the AN 4's (which is a lot of Suttas, sorry for that). There are many fiesty suttas there (every bit as fiesty as anything I've ever said on this forum), where the Buddha makes very direct...

Re: Buddhism as a supra-national, supra-racial religion?

Greetings, I noted this elsewhere: I find it difficult to conceive of a Buddhism that is somehow separate from Asian cultures. I tend to think that Asians own the copyright to the Dhamma, so to speak. On the one hand, it seems silly to think so (and it makes Buddhism seem like just another tribal r...
