Re: Meditation experience

What didn't work was relying too much on others to tell what worked for them and what didn't.

What worked for me was trying what seemed to make sense to me and then seeing for myself what worked for me and what did not.

Re: High Birth Low Birth

I can’t help but wonder if the Buddha’s pride was hurt by Ambattha’s repetitious insults to the Sakyan clan. After having read a fair amount of the suttas I find it incredible that you would wonder if the Buddha’s pride was hurt by Ambattha’s repetitious insults to the Sakyan clan. The far gone one...

Re: How perception be wholesome or unwholesome?

Things which are conducive to the goal are called "wholesome" and thing counterproductive to the goal are called "unwholesome".
It is that simple I think.

Re: Determinism vs Dependent origination

As I said earlier, to try to make determinism and free will conflict with eachother is like trying to make the process and the outcome separate when they are indeed one and the same. You assume that everything is sequential and orderly based on time, but if time does not exist (and it really doesn'...

Re: Determinism vs Dependent origination

In short, you can have free will and determinism at the same time. If you apply restrictions and qualifications to determinism you can have both at the same time...if you apply restrictions and qualifications to determinism you can have it with anything you want.....you can even have determinsim wi...

Re: PreBirth Experience (PBE),Remembering Birth,Past Lives

Theravada don't believe in transitory state after death.. There are, I think, many theravada buddhists who believe in that stuff but they are not likely to post much on this forum because on this forum people mostly stick to what the buddha (gotama) taught as documented in the pali canon.....and no...

Re: Lying precept

The answer to how to deal with coworkers asking your salary, without either lying or causing disharmony is simple. Tell them politely that you don't want them to know your salary. I have lived in thailand for a number of years. I am not particularly perceptive when it comes to observing, analyzing,...

Re: Intentional or deliberate lie meaning ?

Intention is the simpler mental action, the intention to kill, steal, lie etc. The motive is your reasons and explanations for why you are performing a particular intention. It modifies kamma but intention is taken as primary. Killing offensively or defensively is still killing but the kamma may be...

Re: PreBirth Experience (PBE),Remembering Birth,Past Lives

I didn't say guides force us here. I don't honestly know about guides. I assume they could be spiritually developed beings. I think our kamma forces us here, this could manifest as the guides telling us to come here. I looked again and you are right, you did not say that guides force us here. I did...

Re: PreBirth Experience (PBE),Remembering Birth,Past Lives

Well yeah. But this is still a prison, if you get out through practice you don't have to come back. The buddha talks like in terms of rebirth it is advatageous to be born a human in this world. You say that "guides" force us here. Is it that they know better then us what would benefit us? If "guide...

Re: What is it that take birth ?

Maybe these question are not worth considering but I will pose them anyway because it might be that our attitudes about birth will influence our idea about what it is that takes birth: Let's talk about physical birth. How do we know what physical birth is? Do we know exactly when it happens? How do ...

I think that watching TV is OK as long as you don't skip the commercials......if you skip the commercials it is then too much entertainment.

We ought to work to not have to come back unless it is voluntarily.
I thought that the buddha taught that being born as a human in this world was very rare and that it offered the opportunity to progress towards the end of suffering.

Re: Determinism vs Dependent origination

Again I think you are no longer replying to the meaning of what I am saying and instead discussing the way I present it. I'm not interested in going there. It seems you have nothing to say about the meaning of what I have said in recent posts. I think your discussion is more of an explication of how...

Re: Determinism vs Dependent origination

A determinate world does not necessarily have to function through cause and effect....it may be that there are hard wired things that are "causes" and others that are "effects" of those "causes" but it doesn't have to be that way.....it could just be that we are pre-determined to view events that w...
