Re: Buddhism and Islam in Asia: A Long and Complicated History

What about the "Holy" Roman Empire? Also, I think that at the time of the crusades europe might have been described with respect to christiainity in a fairly similarly way to how the kingdoms of the middle east were at the time of the "islamic empire". Poorly written but I hope someone gets the idea...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

Although the suttas teach repeatedly how in the seen, there should be only the seen etc., they do so in very specific contexts. Not so. Can you name a sutta where there is a statement to the effect of "When you think that your actions have caused harm to yourself or others, you should see that as a...

Doodoot,
can you please come down to earth and get back on topic.....and take a reasonably small bite of the history of everything (hopefully one associated with the topic) and chew it politely.....only if you want to.....

Re: Contemporary threats to free speech

Hi Pseudobabble This is a complete red herring you are chasing but here goes. It is not a red herring. The context that you put you response in does in the english language using commonly held principles of logic and inference mean exactly pseudobabble said. While you may think that your words conv...

Although the suttas teach repeatedly how in the seen, there should be only the seen etc., they do so in very specific contexts. Not so. In the bahiya sutta mr. bahiya just requested a teaching in brief....and this is what he got: "Then, Bāhiya, you should train yourself thus: In reference to the se...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

Greetings, To think that I have great expectations for the posters here is laughable. Indeed. For what are expectations but a means by which to set oneself up for disappointment? Expecting or demanding others to think like us, be like us, or to adhere to our private standards and proclivitie...

Re: Activism supporting Rohingya

Greetings Chownah, Your post can easily be taken that we should ignore the suffering of the rohingya.....and others. Mine? No, I'm just reaffirming Dharmasherab's perspective that one should not unconditionally accept the prevailing narrative, especially when there is awareness of how mainstream me...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I really agree with this. I don't mind people discussing what they think are bad things about other religions but the tone of the discussion seem to me to be bashing and uncaring about the people who are muslims and who do not ascribe to those negative things which people see. The tone of the discu...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

There have been a lot of ugly posts about Islam and other faiths. I really agree with this. I don't mind people discussing what they think are bad things about other religions but the tone of the discussion seem to me to be bashing and uncaring about the people who are muslims and who do not ascrib...

Re: Mind independent of body?

Agganna sutta is very clear on the independent mind. Lord budda explains when this earth disappears the mind dwells in the brahma loka called Abhassara. There the mind stays luminous and feeding on delight. When the earth reappears the mind again gets back to the earth and conditioned by formation ...

Re: Mind independent of body?

They are both independent and interdependent. The analogy given is of two sheaves of wheat propped up against each other; they are independent entities, but when one falls the other falls too (Visuddhimagga XVIII: 32). Are you actually saying that they are two SEPERATE entities which are interdepen...

Re: Anger

Yes, children need to learn about anger. Making anger acceptable will never give the right lesson. Children copy their parents; parents modeling anger will teach anger. If a child becomes angry one should display displeasure with that anger.....one of the key things is to be calm when doing this. C...

Re: Anger

Anger is a VERY VERY BIG PROBLEM IN THE WORLD. chownah I agree. Nevertheless, we have anger in the world, and we need to teach our children to deal with it in a healthy way. What do you make of the following? The Dhammapada mentions how anger can be a chariot. 222. He who checks rising anger as a c...
