Re: What would you do if there is no rebirth ?

How I live my life has nothing to do with rebirth. I have no idea if there is rebirth or not. What the buddha taught helps make life better regardless. Not knowing if there is rebirth or not is great!....it will make dieing more interesting.....I guess....don't know for sure.....

I must have missed something. Previously I asked what "perception" was translated from in an11.10 and you said "sanna". Now it seems you are saying that the word for perception there is a compound word as a label for a type of meditative absorbtion.
Doodoot,
Can you clarify this?

Re: Supramundane Jhanas AS Nibbana

I have had experiences which I interpret as being glimpses of a state where what is experienced is not labeled, is not dissected into self/other. If the mind can see/distinguish shapes, forms & colours; it seems this is sanna. It does not seem this way to me with respect to walking around....it see...

Re: Supramundane Jhanas AS Nibbana

....I think it is clear from an11.10 that this is kind of perception is not the kind of perception used for achieving direct knowledge. As posted, in my view, perception is not used generically or ordinarily in AN 11.10. As I posted, it appears "sanna" is used within the names of different types of...

Re: Supramundane Jhanas AS Nibbana

If I remember correctly, in neither of the suttas is sanna/sanjanati (perception/perceive) ascribed to accomplished people and it is used in both for unskilled people. I already offered my opinion with reference to MN 43, where wisdom is cojoined with consciousness & perception. There are many sutt...

Re: Supramundane Jhanas AS Nibbana

Secondly because cessation of perception is the goal of the path, one does not practice cessation of perception, one attains it by means of the path of practice. I see the difficulty you are explaining (I hope I do anyway).....i.e. cessation of perception is the goal and it is therefore not found i...

Re: Supramundane Jhanas AS Nibbana

Can you tell me what pali word is used which is translated to " perception " in the two instances from an11.010 https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an11/an11.010.than.html#fnt-1 shown here?: Saññā. Saññā (in AN 11.10 ) is a noun. Sañjānāti in MN 1 is a verb. The meaning of both words appear...

Re: Supramundane Jhanas AS Nibbana

Notice that in mn1 it is only the "uninstructed run-of-the-mill person" who "PERCEIVES earth as earth" but that the arahant and the thatagata are said that each "DIRECTLY KNOWS earth as earth". This seems to amply agree with the first excerpt wherein similarly for the thoroughbred man perception ha...

Re: Is smoking tobacco/ e-ciggarettes a breach of the 5th precept?

Intoxicants are not allowed--period: hard to believe this can be debated. It's actually intoxicants which lead to carelessness . Nicotine is a stimulant, rather similar to coffee. Is coffee not allowed? Nicotine addicts are careless in that they carelessly disregard the health effects of smoking ci...

Re: Self view and conceit

#1. I don't find the chariot simile very illuminating, I think because I have a background in Systems thinking. This says that you can look at anything as a system, and the basic definition of a system is "a set of components connected for a purpose". It works best for man-made things, though it ca...

Re: Self view and conceit

I mean "lack of control" as described in the suttas, the aggregates not always doing what I want them to do, or not being what I want them to be. I have not been following this topic closely. Can you bring a link to the sutta which describes "lack of control" as you mention...perhaps with respect t...

Re: Self view and conceit

OK, same for me. But what about being in control? I have a sense of me and the sense of not being in control - do you see the problem? These are not mutually exclusive. I accept what you say and have no desire to contradict you....but I am confused. I said I have a sense of control (of this hand), ...
