Re: drowsiness in meditation

I would concur with everyone. Spending all of your time in worldly pursuits will still get you to the same place in the end: dead. Probably even faster actually. You have this great gift of not only having been born in this realm, but born human. Don't waste it by spending all your time on the rat r...

Re: What is a "world system"?

Well, it would make sense that life on other worlds would have a different system. Different physiology, beliefs, culture, everything. And they surely wouldn't have heard of our Buddha. So I think it would make the most sense to say a world system is a "system of a world." Interesting that...

Re: Your initial experience with meditation?

I struggled with it for quite a while. At first, I was so determined to get something from it. I had to control my breathing, do it perfectly. I wanted to be in control of everything still. This held me back for months. I almost got frustrated and gave up on it, since I wanted results and I wasn't s...

Re: Some guidance if you can please?

Do what works. Worrying overmuch about Mahayana versus Theravada won't achieve anything but a divide. If clarity is your goal, do what brings clarity. After all, when you are sitting in meditation, are you really concerned with such labels as Theravada or Zen or Mahayana? Ultimately, these are as mu...

Re: Hello from North Carolina!

Welcome to the Dhamma Wheel! I lived in S. Carolina for 6 years, so I feel you on the lack of a sangha. There's not much in the area, and even less in the Theravada tradition. The internet can be a great spiritual resource to help you on your path, and I wish you the best of luck

Re: Strange Sensation while Meditating

Many thanks for your reply. My education so far has been piecemeal, and I've focused more on meditating than on the reading bits, since it's all been very confusing with so many different traditions and teachings. The only book I've read so far is The Buddha and His Dhamma , by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. O...

Strange Sensation while Meditating

Hi everyone. I have been meditating frequently for a few months now, and recently my meditation has hanged somehow, and I'm a bit confused. I've never had a formal teacher, so I have no one to go to for guidance right now. Meditation generally consists of sitting in lotus position, and focusing my m...

Hi everyone!

Hello everybody! I'm Dallas. I'm 29, was raised Christian, but it never settled well with me. My father is a preacher, and the expectations of my family were that I would also become a Christian minister. I enrolled in seminary, and a couple of months in couldn't find any faith to continue. I spent ...
