Re: Metta Prayer and Anatta

When you get to the point of radiating metta to all being, reflect on the fact that all things are Not Self, composed of some combination of the five aggregates. Then, continue with your metta practice as normal. You'll get some interesting results. You can try the same for impermanence and imperfec...

Re: Do monks change their legal name when they ordained?

Do fellow monks and friends who are lay followers still colloquially refer to the monk by his legal name (e.g. "Hey Steve, what's up.")? It depends. In Thailand, Sangha members are usually addressed by their lay names, but not always. In Sri Lanka (and Myanmar?) Sangha are, I think, always addresse...

Re: Can we teach Anicca, Dukkha , Anatta without the teaching of rebirth and Kamma?

You could, I suppose, but the latter is a logical extension of the former. The two concepts are ultimately inseparable (besides release into Nibbana), imo.

Re: Secrets about Buddhism everyone wish they'd known

Stiphan, mind if I ask what your sources are? Ice Ages always follows Global Warming brought on by wrong use of sophisticated technology. Nonsense! There have been no technologically sophisticated societies on Earth before this one. If our civilization collapsed today, there would be eviden...

Re: Did Buddha ever know about the hypnotism?

That's a darned good question. Presumably yes. Jhana is different from hypnosis, imo. In hypnosis, it feels like you're being "led" somewhere. I think that jhana feels more liberating. A slightly related question: does anyone speculate on how the quality of Buddha's speech compelled so many to mass ...

Re: Strong aversion against blue veins

Try blue kasina meditation. It helps you to develop beautiful perceptions of blue objects. You'd be surprised at how effective it is, even before you reach absorption. Here's a link to a pdf that explains it: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi...

Re: HHDL on Interdialog Between Theravadin & Tibetan Buddhists

That's awesome. HHDL has made amazing efforts for interdialogues during these past few decades. I've visited his Religion-Science institute at Emory University, and it's a marvelous testament to the power of interdisciplinary cooperation. I would love to meet him someday.

Thanks for sharing this.

Re: Race, IQ and Idenity politics: A debate.

Here's an interesting nugget: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Intelligence_Test_of_Cultural_Homogeneity It's called the BITCH test (lol). It's a 100 question verbal test in which the questions were based off of 1970's African American vernacular, instead of the typical White American diction. As...

Re: Buying flowers online is a cheap and easy way to make merit.

LG2V, Have you seen the Dana Sutta? (https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an07/an07.049.than.html) It talks about various motivations for giving. The motivation you say that you respond to is included there as "'When this gift of mine is given, it makes the mind serene. Gratification & joy a...

Re: Buying flowers online is a cheap and easy way to make merit.

If it is something to do with the quality of the flowers then exactly what quality is it which creates the enhancement? chownah By quality, I mean healthier, larger, and more beautiful flowers. For example, a bouquet of lotus flowers like the ones in the picture below can be bought for as little as...

Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

Here's a very provocative video of one of Jordan Peterson's lectures. In it, he discusses some of the problems with atheism as construed by contemporary intellectuals such as Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins:
