Re: trial assigning Nibbana and dhamma into AI AlphaGo's architecture.

What are the implications for AI/Human practice of the noble eightfold path? Do you think that we can program an AI to practice for the cessation of suffering, or introduce some of the programming-related thinking as a modern way of inspiring right practice among the general population?

Re: Is usury a form of wrong livelihood?

@LG2V. I am glad to see you easily comprehended, without trouble, the great explanations in the Pali suttas :) . Below are other quotes to consider: Poverty is called suffering in the world; so, too, is getting into debt. A poor person, in debt, partaking of sensuality, suffers hardship. Then they ...

Re: Is usury a form of wrong livelihood?

@DooDoot Thank you. Wow, that was a great explanation. It makes so much sense. You're super smart. Yeah, I think that usury was the wrong term for me to use. I thought that it meant lending in general. I forgot that it meant predatory lending. Nonetheless, you hit the nail on the head ...

I think the commentaries said that he is called Nathadeva. It means "Protector".

Is usury a form of wrong livelihood?

The main sutta that is cited in favor of this claim is MN 117 : "[5] Of those, right view is the forerunner. And how is right view the forerunner? One discerns wrong livelihood as wrong livelihood, and right livelihood as right livelihood. This is one's right view. And what is wrong livelihood? Sche...

Re: Want to improve sila

Try to make some sort of gamification scheme. Gamify it. Give yourself points based on good actions taken, and deduct points based on mistakes made. Add or subtract it in a text document or spreadsheet. Set goals for yourself and see if you can hit them. Here's a helpful video: https://www.ted.com/t...

Re: More People Trained in Metta to Promote Peace

There is a web site similar to what you are describing: https://www.theofferingbowl.com/ People post their petition/wish for funds for participating in upcoming Buddhist retreats and events and donors can send them donations. It is sort of like gofundme or kiva, except that it is strictly for Buddh...

More People Trained in Metta to Promote Peace

Would we be able to prevent wars and promote a better society by training more people in loving-kindness meditation, particularly at the jhana level? I remember reading a story (I can't find the exact sutta) about a king who asked monks to train him in metta meditation. After 7 years of training, he...

Chances are they would get problems with the IRS, and they would have to sell/trade in whatever goods they supernormally produced illegally on the black market or legally only in very small amounts (just try to sell diamonds or precious metals in bulk without having the proper documentation for the...

Re: Anger

Recently, I've noticed that anger is an obvious sign that one is viewing things as permanent, satisfactory, and as Self in some way. It's picking up the reused garbage that is the 5 aggregates and replaying painful mental stories in hopes of accessing a mythical state of happiness that would occur "...

Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Hey everyone,

What are the kammic consequences for using supernormal powers for personal/material gain? For example, if someone were to produce gold with mental powers or by some other resolve bring personal wealth?

Re: Visit to Bangkok

Hope you have fun. I don't know much about finding dhamma books, but Bangkok is full of great wats and monks. I didn't see a lot of Burmese or Sri Lankan teachers there when I went two months ago, but I am a newbie and mostly went to the big tourist areas. Based on my experience, I would say to chec...

No. Just no. Firstly because you're trying to fix a short-term situational mental problem with a long-term physical treatment, secondly because the treatments you suggest don't target the problem, and thirdly because they are of very dubious effectiveness even for the problem they are supposed to f...

Re: question regarding not-self of volition and conscious action

I was just thinking about this last night. There are situations in which one's volitions can't successfully control one's movements, or direct one's thinking in the desired way. For example: 1.) Your leg could have fallen asleep, and you could find yourself struggling to move it around. It could be ...
