Re: Do Taxes Violate The Second Precept?

No. Ordering or carrying out any killing at a government's behest, whether penally or martially, would certainly be considered a breach of the first precept. What is sometimes a point of hot dispute among Buddhists is not whether the first precept is broken in these cases, but whether there are eve...

Re: Do Taxes Violate The Second Precept?

Greetings, The Buddha of the Sutta Pitaka had no problem with the reasonable collection of taxes. If it was an ethical concern, in and of itself, I expect he would have raised the matter. Metta, Paul. :) Thanks Paul. No - taxes do not violate the precepts - although refusing to pay taxes while utii...

Do Taxes Violate The Second Precept?

I am curious, because it involves the State "taking" money from people. But on some level, at least in some governments, the taxation does seem to be cooperative as well as coercive. What do you all think? Does taxing others, or raising tax rates, count as "taking what is not given"? Additionally, d...

Re: Why was Mahāmoggallāna blue?

I'm curious about this as well. I assume that Mahamoggallana was a Black Man. The color used to describe him, "Nila", can be used to describe Black, Blue, Brown, or other colors in between. The Bhikkhuni Uppalavanna was describes as being "Nila" as well. I think that's the case for the "Nila Kasina"...

Re: Local Florists in Thailand

I wanted to give you guys an update. I just left Thailand a few days ago. I lived in Bang Na, which is between Bangkok and the Samut Prakan suburb. I bought some flowers and other items for puja and dana at some of the famous Bangkok wats. I did get "farang" priced at one of the shops, but most of t...

Dual N Back - Brain Game to Help Improve IQ

Hey everybody, I've recently come across the Dual N Back game, which some studies have confirmed to improve working memory, fluid intelligence, and IQ. I'm really excited about and I want to share it with you guys. The game works by having you remember a series of letter sounds and positions on a 3 ...

This is a very provocative question. I'm curious about the answer as well.

Re: Karmic Result of Starting a Beauty/Modeling Company?

I was unsure of the karmic effect of it. I know that professions such as acting and sports are not recommended, and I think it's safe to presume that something like pornography isn't good to pursue either. I'd appreciate your opinions. I haven't poured any time or resources into the idea, yet it wo...

Re: Karmic Result of Starting a Beauty/Modeling Company?

It depends on your intention. If your intention is to objectify beautiful women for men's pleasure, then this is basically human trafficking (the business of humans) and definitely not skillful or right livelihood. If you're assisting women to be human mannequins for consumer goods so they can make...

Re: Karmic Result of Starting a Beauty/Modeling Company?

The prohibited trades might be more than what were listed. For example, tobacco trade, medical drugs that might have serious side effects covered up, opening a casino. There is also an instant in the sutta when the Buddha has something negative to said about being a stage actor or something similar...

Re: Karmic Result of Starting a Beauty/Modeling Company?

I've got a (maybe) brilliant idea for a new company. I've worked as a web designer and developer for much of the past year, and I've also played a bit with digital marketing. I'd like to start an digital modeling group, which will more or less involve posting pictures and videos of beautiful women,...

Re: Local Florists in Thailand

Thanks for your help, guys. I was interested in the idea because if it were executed in the ideal manner, I could literally fill a temple with flowers for not that much money. More merit, I suppose. I already support local monasteries. I just had the idea and wanted to see if I could go somewhere wi...

This is stupid. It comes off as trolling. I wish you the best, but there are better ways to cope with pain.

Local Florists in Thailand

Hey everyone, Sorry for the double post. I figured it would get more traffic here, since it hadn't got any responses in the Dana section. Local Florists in Thailand

Hey everyone, I want to order flowers for puja at one of the Thai temples, ideally Wat Asokaram or Wat Pho. I live in The United States, and I figured that I could leverage the USD to purchase a huge amount of flowers for puja and merit in Thailand. I've been told that one can easily get dozens of f...
