Re: Copyright

Hi, Nowadays, with affordable and fast internet connection and with many Buddhist websites storing large number of Dhamma books, perhaps free distribution of books may not be as relevant as it used to be, when I first became interested in Buddhist study. Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, when Dhamm...

Re: Copyright

Of course. That's exactly what is happening with sites like Access to Insight, and so on. Can it bring in enough money to finance an operation like PTS, BPS, or Wisdom? I don't know, I don't know their financial models. In my opinion the "shareware" at Access to Insight, etc, is not yet a...

Re: Copyright

Its a mistake to assume that the only cost of publication is the printing. Having worked for one book publisher, the cost of printing as a total of all production costs was less than 10 percent. Alternatively -- to minimize costs of printing, distribution, overheads, etc -- I wonder if the authors/...

Re: Copyright

The late Ven Abhinyana, an Australian monk, had the following declaration at his website: "Since all the words we use come to us from other people, there is no copyright on any of my books. If anyone wishes to reprint anything from them, or even all, they may do so without permission; all I ask...

here, from the wiki, maybe it helps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinaya Vinayas arose in Buddhism, based upon geographical or cultural differences and the different Buddhist schools that developed. Three of these are still in use. The Vinayas are the same in substance and have only minor difference...

This is the first of the five hindrances to jhana.
Dear Bhante,

How do you think of melodious chanting often seen at some Buddhist temples? Would you see it as a form of music, and if so, would it be considered as a hindrance?

Re: Modernish Theravada History

Yes, I've not heard Mahasi teachers be negative about jhana, either of the "vipassnana" or "normal" type. Similarly Pa Auk Sayadaw mentions that he teaches both jhana and "pure insight" approaches. From what I read and personal contacts with 2 meditation teachers of Pa...

It thus tends to have more of an historical sense, viz the 大眾部, for instance.
Thanks for the correction. I'd also like to know the Chinese term for "Thera": 上 座 or 長 老 (zhang3 lao3), or both?

I agree. Although the term "School of the Elders" for Theravada is literally correct, I believe the term "Southern School" or "Southern Transmission" are more commonly used.
