Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

If you care to do so, I would appreciate your explanation for how you believe one's opinion regarding Kabat-Zinn plays a role in a determination of whether one is a follower of the Buddha. It has traditionally been held that refuge-going is what determines this, not one’s opinion about this or that...

Re: Right Speech: Getting Personal

[...] I delayed replying as I wanted to see if Sam Vara would confirm or repudiate my understanding of his words. As he’s confirmed them I don’t there’s anything further for me to add, except perhaps the observation that in polite circles when someone tells you that his words have been misunderstoo...

Re: Feeding on rapture

"Feeding on rapture" pītibhakkha by itself is also found in three of the Dīgha Nikāya suttas: the Brahmajāla, Pāthika, and Aggañña.

Re: Right Speech: Getting Personal

I can see how the following comment(s) might reasonably be taken personally by someone else. "Here is the source of your confusion." (When you do not believe you are confused.) The word “confusion” is prone to ambiguity on account of its having to serve as the nominal form of both the active and pa...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

The quotes appear to be about cultivating awareness of the sensation of taste. What is the problem with it? That would depend on who the reader is. For a follower of Aristippus of Cyrene I shouldn't think there would be any problem at all with it. The whole book would serve as a splendid guide on h...

In every reported case, canonical and commentarial, they were reborn as devas.

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

If I go to a MBSR presentation, will the presenters there teach me that my life is worth living? My guess is, based on what they say in their books and talks, they won't. In the case of Kabat-Zinn, I've no idea if he'll teach you that your life is worth living, but to judge from his book Coming to ...

Re: Who can ordain a Samaneri?

Yes, it confirms my belief that a Bhikkhu Upajjhaya is sufficient to ordain a Samaneri. Which leads to the question - Can a Bhikkhuni ordain a samaneri? The Vinaya Piṭaka and Vinaya Commentary don't say who is allowed to give sāmaṇerī-pabbajjā. Post-commentarial texts like the Mahāvaṃsa and Vinaya ...

Re: List of rules for monks relevant for lay women

Below is a list of all of the rules in the Pāṭimokkha (though not all of the rules in the whole of the Vinaya) that are in some way connected with women. I’ve omitted those that concern only bhikkhunīs, female wanderers or queens. Pārājika: Rules entailing expulsion from the Sangha (Defeat) 1. Shoul...

Re: Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Is there even a Sutta reference that Iddhi powers could be used in such a way? Not in the Pali suttas. There is, however, a German translation of a Tibetan gterma called Die Große Rumpelstilzchen Sūtra . It was discovered in the mid-19th century by a pair of Hessian tertöns called the Brothers Grim...

Re: A woman reporting a monk?

How does this apply to online settings that technologically allow private messaging? I don't know. Almost certainly there'll be differences of opinion among Vinaya scholars. If it hasn't already started, I expect sooner or later there'll be committees of Vinaya scholars holding meetings to discuss ...

Re: A woman reporting a monk?

Does a woman have any recourse when a monk transgresses this rule? The part that I quoted was the second stage in the evolution of this rule. In the third and final stage the rule becomes: ‘If a monk gives a teaching of more than five or six sentences to a woman, except in the presence of a man who...

Is there any special hell that you might know of for sramanas who sleep all day? Asking for a friend here.
No idea. If there is, maybe it would like apartment 306, where lying down is enforced 24/7.

if the terms of service remain unchanged in this regard, then i contend we are promoting a 'safe space' where others are afraid to refute validly on the basis of offending someone As the TOS phrase is "ad hominem attack" and not "ad hominem argument", I should have thought it obvious that the prosc...

Re: AN 10.76: What do shame, remorse, and negligence refer to?

Do you think it is appropriate to consider the terms "right hiri" and "right ottappa" to be how the buddha used those terms?.....in other words hiri which is conducive to achieving the goal is "right hiri" etc.?....like in the 8FPath. Besides being "guardians of the world", hiri and ottappa also ma...

Re: AN 10.76: What do shame, remorse, and negligence refer to?

By that, could it be that the possible reason why kukkucca is described in the Vinaya as occurring before is because shame (kukkucca) can arise due to only having considered doing the unwholesome action (but not having done it)? Yes. Or merely being presented with an opportunity: Soon afterwards so...

Re: AN 10.76: What do shame, remorse, and negligence refer to?

Assuming that they are good standards, hiri and ottappa are the two mental factors that ensure that you do live up to them. Good according to whose idea of goodness? Bhagavaṃ mūlakā no dhammā, Bhagavaṃ nettikā, Bhagavaṃ paṭisaraṇā. “Our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One, guided by the Blessed...

Re: New Analyo Bhikkhu Book to be Released

The book ad links to a book publication sponsorship appeal. I am unfamiliar with this approach for books for sale. Is this common? Gift Aid is very common with registered charities in Britain, but I don't know about other countries. A practical example Mr Burns donates £100 to charity. Mr Burns is ...

I am hesitant to say that this stuff is relative as I fear (ottappa?) it will cause discord and I'm sure you know how hard I try to avoid discord....but....the only way so far that I have seen to make sense of this stuff is to say that perhaps hiri is simply not living up to whatever standards one ...
