Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

The problem with the three lifetime model, is that to eliminate ignorance, you have to go back to your previous life. This jaw-droppingly fatuous misunderstanding of the three-life exposition was already addressed by pilgrim on the first page of this thread. The problem you describe would arise onl...

That is, bikers (many of them in proper black leather biker outfits) gather up in hundreds in front of Catholic churches and the Catholic priests bless those bikes. Sometimes, even the priests wear biker vests over their official religious outfit. Impressively efficient of Holy Mother Church to ble...

Why does he translate it as "human beings"?
Presumably because the commentary glosses the term that way (sattavaṇijjā = manussavikkayo, "the sale of humans"), and on this occasion he believes the commentary to be correct.

I am heading to Thailand at the end of May for the Vesak conference organised by the UN and wondered if anybody knows of any English speaking teachers of boran kamatthana in Bangkok that I can come into contact with. You could try paying a visit to the lay teacher Nai Boonman Poonyathiro at his tek...

Re: vsm asubha

Uparujjhati and Nirodha are synonyms. Only according to the scholars or your personal ideas. If they were the same; the Buddha would not have used different words. Copying & pasting from dictionaries does not demonstrate dhamma. The terms are best compared contextually . It is best to provide a com...

Re: Is the idea that Nibbāna is seen at each of 4 stages of awakening canonical?

I have always read that the fruit of each stage occurs when the mind experiences Nibbāna...I have never read this in any actual sutta. Is it canonical? If so, is it just in the Abhidhamma or elsewhere? It’s straightforwardly inferable from the Suttas. Were it the case that the sotāpanna had not see...

Re: Bill V. on Theravadan nihilism

Yet in the Suttas, as far as I can tell, there is no mention that Nibbana is "nicca". To my knowledge the first time that this happens is in the Canonical commentaries, more precisely: Kathavatthu https://suttacentral.net/kv1.6 and Culaniddesa https://suttacentral.net/cnd22/pli/ms . For the second ...

Are there any devotes serving the needs of those hermit monks?
I'm not presently in touch with them, but if they're living in Thailand it's unlikely they'll lack the four requisites.

Re: Creating a Practice When Life is Hard

As far as I know mindfulness practice was not meant for lay people. Is there any source that tells otherwise? There's the commentary to the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta. In his gloss on "Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu abides contemplating..." Buddhaghosa makes a point of quoting Dhammapada 142 in order to stress ...

Re: Does Noble Eightfold Path include both Samatha and Vipassana?

Does Noble Eightfold Path include both Samatha and Vipassana? Yes. From the Nettipakaraṇa's Sixteen Modes of Conveying in Separate Treatment it may be inferred that the first two path factors are to be reckoned as vipassanā and the remaining six as samatha. Herein, what is co-ordination of footing?...

Re: What is the proper method for reading lists in suttas?

In the suttas, there are often lists of items. These lists can sometimes be difficult to understand, as they don't always state in what succession the listed items apply or how the items are to be understood as relating to each other. [...] I presume there are methods for reading these lists proper...

Re: What is the difference between God's plan and Kamma?

The usual one found in Judaism,, Christianity, Islam and plebeian version of Hinduism If it's that sort of God you have in mind then the answer's easy: The law of kamma and vipāka doesn't play favourites. That sort of God does. "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated," (and before they were even...

However there is already a very, very, very, well-established Theravāda mainline tradition of reading bodhi satta as bodhi sattva . Bodhi sakta is a (correct or incorrect) speculation of EBT studies. Actually it predates modern EBT studies by at least fifteen centuries. The “well-established Therav...

Nobody asks for their [Thai mae chees'] views on anything, much less the Dhamma. Well, they might. It would depend — precisely as it does with Thai monks — on what the mae chee has spent her time doing. For example, if she's an old peasant lady of little education who's ordained out of a wish to de...

i have looked over ven dhammanando's break-down of the pāḷi, but i honestly have no idea what he is saying. Are there any Pali canonical sources which address this topic? No, you need to go to the commentaries. This is from Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation of the Suttanipāta Atthakathā. I've added the Pali: Buddhā sayañca bujjhanti, pare ca bodhenti. Paccekabuddhā sayameva bujjhanti, na pare bodhenti. Buddhas...

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
