Re: The Satipatthana Sutta a forgery?

New to the conversation. What is the status of the Maha Satipatthana, which mirrors most of the Satipatthana, and is used widely in Burma and American meditation centers? Despite its slightly misleading title, this thread is actually about the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta. It's concerned with the thesis ...

Re: Did the Buddha ever state flatly...

But with the Buddha he extinguished all desire and aversion and went on to eat, drink, sleep, presumably avoid unnecessary painful situations (he didn't lie in the sun until he was blistered and near death, for example), teach others, invent rules, etc. So, without using textual gymnastics and pick...

Re: Birth control and Buddhism

It's not to abort the developing of fertilized egg because nothing to abort. AFAIK, birth control pills work in three ways, stopping sperm and egg from meeting, stopping the ovulation and they thin the inner lining of the uterus in case the first and second method fail. Other form of birth control ...

Re: Birth control and Buddhism

Birth control pill prevents conception but some of them can also act as abortifacient, in case the prevention is failed. When someone uses birth control before they have intercourse, their intention is to prevent conception and intention is karma. If Buddhists do not have intention to kill then why...

Re: [MN 111] Fallacy of Anupadadhammavipassana while in a jhana

This talk of the rarity of the word adhimokkha in the suttas seems a bit of a :redherring: to me.

Though the word may be rare, what it denotes most certainly is not. The idea is conveyed most often by adhimuccati, the verb from which adhimokkha derives.

Again, many thanks! My pleasure. Here are my notes on the final forty pages. 118. In order to show that samkharas never come to existence alone... Sammohavinodanī - Paṭiccasamuppādavibhaṅgavaṇṇanā, Vibh-a. 154. 118. The following passage will also show that viññāṇa... Sammohavinodanī - Paṭiccasamup...

Re: How to Pronounce Theravada

“T-hear-Ah-Waah-Duh” Your proposed transliteration makes 'r' the final consonant of the first syllable when in fact it's the initial consonant of the second syllable. Also, the insertion of a hyphen between the 't' and the 'h' gives the misleading impression that there is a hiatus, making the monos...

Re: Chiang Mai visit?

So, your not at a temple. Not usually. If I am it will most often be at one of Thailand's 2,000 or so abandoned wats. It sounds like Wat Doi Mae Pang and you (if your accepting visitors) would be worth a visit. How far is this from Chiang Mai city? It's about 100 km from the Changpeuak bus station ...

Re: Why sakadagami and anagami disciples not found ?

As I said , the suttas was already available since thousands of years , why anagamin word Wasn't stated and used when referring to those disciples that supposed in said state ? In Sutta usage the different Ariyan stages are describable in various ways and some are preferred in some contexts, others...

What temple are you at?
Since the end of last year's rainy season I've been living in a kuti in a rubber forest in the Phrao District of Chiang Mai. I'm about 4 km from Wat Doi Mae Pang, the monastery of the late Luang Poo Waen.

Re: Cut down the forest (lust), but not the tree?

See note 20: "The meaning of this injunction is: "Cut down the forest of lust, but do not mortify the body."" I'm surprised that Buddharakkhita would say this, for “Cut down the forest of lust but don’t mortify the body” is actually the Mahāyāna interpretation of the phrase. E.g., “If one could gai...

Re: Why sakadagami and anagami disciples not found ?

Since the burden of proof lies with the one who makes the claim, therefore it seems that the << whatever Available texts >> need to be Re-examine and prove as Authentic ! It is you who (it seems) wishes to cast doubt on the reliability of the anāgāmin-related suttas and therefore it is you who is m...

Re: Why sakadagami and anagami disciples not found ?

But not returning to the world that doesn't necessarily mean Equivalent to anagami, The phrase is "to this world," not "to the world." And in the suttas this phrase is precisely what defines an anāgāmin. what if there is No such stage but something added later ?! You haven't yet supplied any reason...

I see , but does the Pali mentioned the term Sakadagami /Anagami then ?
No, but it describes a person who is one. The feature attributed to Ugga wouldn't apply if he wasn't one.
