Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Actually, those terms are used in many places in Vibhangapakarana. I'm actually already familiar with all the canonical texts in which the ten terms (not nine!) are used. I was replying, however, to your earlier claim that the said terms are: "...discussed in detail mostly in the three commentaries...

Re: JE Carpenter, digha nikaya

Anyone have information on this translator? He was a Unitarian minister and Sanskrit scholar. He assisted Thomas Rhys Davids with the editing of the romanised Pali editions of the Dīgha Nikāya and its commentary, but I don't think he translated any Pali texts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_E...

Re: Wrong Livelihood: Monk’s Alms round

Below are the quotes from the pages 28 and 29 from the Visuddhimagga with relevant modern examples quoted from Results From Collecting Alms In Kauai . In the Visuddhimagga’s treatment of wrong livelihood for monks there is something that's crucial to a correct understanding but which you left out o...

Those 9 stages are also listed in the original commentary, section 1.3.5.3. Tatiyacatukkaniddesa in https://legacy.suttacentral.net/pi/ps1.3 of Patisambhidamaggapakarana (or Part I, p. 360 of Buddha Jayanati Tipitaka): “.. yam cittan mano mānasan hadayan pandaran manomanayatanan manindriyan viññ...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

Concluding remarks on the article... If you cannot do the real commitment and the consensual marriage thing, you still need the guardian's permission. Remember, if you are not ready to commit in this life, you might meet again in another life, and another and another. I suppose you might . And at so...

While the intention that drives the action of throwing food can be varied, as mentioned previously, generally do you think throwing food can be considered bad kamma?
I don't think that it would be, at least not in the case of any of the normal ways in which people get rid of excess food.

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

As a Westerner, you are probably interested in Buddhism because you have practiced Buddhism in your past life. This is habitual kamma. The Abhidhamma’s theory of conditional relations isn’t really my strong suit, but insofar as I understand it … When a sentient being of any sort encounters the Budd...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

The law and the Dhamma sometimes agree and sometimes they do not agree. As morality among the people deteriorates, so will the laws for its citizens made by those very same people. In the accounts of the Cakkavattī Sutta and Mahāsupina Jātaka, deterioration starts at the top with the rājā and his m...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

I have some further comments on your article, bhante. In Buddhism, rules are made only because of kamma and for the purpose of Liberation. Not according to the Upāli Sutta (AN. v. 70) where ten reasons are given, several of which pertain only to mundane benefits to be obtained in the present life. T...

Re: Throwing food

What do monks do when there is surplus food available? In Thai wats some of it will be eaten by the laypeople who brought it, some by the temple boys or any laypeople who’ve come to work in the wat, some (in town and city wats) by beggars, and some by the wat’s cats, dogs and chickens. In a large w...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

Sex is synonymous with marriage in the East. Even if you go to a prostitute, they are considered temporary wives. This is true of the Vinaya Piṭaka, but I'm curious to know where in modern Asia you've encountered this usage? Personally I’ve heard brothel-visiting Thai males refer to sex-workers usi...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

I thought I would post the article here. It should be a classical take on the third precept, but because wrong information has been been spreading for the past 50 years in the West, you will question heavily what I write. Bhante, Having now read your article, I am certainly one of those who would q...
