Re: Mahasi quote

I would like to ask a question for the Venerable Bhikkhu Pesala. In an “An Interview with Mahasi Sayadaw”, the Mahasi Sayadaw states: We never make judgments of one’s spiritual status... It is not for us to decide what level of enlightenment he or she has attained. Q58: Venerable Sir, it is, some sa...

Re: That everyone has the Buddha nature does not mean that everyone is a Buddha.

Many many teachings in the spiritual supermarket are labeled as Buddhist, a standard as to which are what they claim to be is if they are in the Suttas or not, I think is a mistake to accept as Buddhist something because it belongs to a tradition that claims to be Buddhist. You mean stuff like the ...

Re: Metta vs. Breath

Mr Man wrote:I think by and large it is best to practice meditation as guided by someone of experience or to stick to the more mainstream methods.
I consider asubha meditation a mainstream method. Why do you consider it not to be mainstream?

Re: Metta vs. Breath

Additionally, Metta practice is recommended to overcome hatred. I would say that most people lean more towards sense desires than to hatred. Therefore some asubha bhavana might be a better way to go. Kind regards, Florian Hi Florian Is asubha bhavana a suitable practice for lay people? Many people ...

Re: New Meditation Center

Actually that is pretty easy and I believe I already mentioned this to you. It could very well just be a dip into bhavanga (subconsciousness or unconciousness). And according to the Paauk Sayadaw this is prone to happen to yogis with weak mindfulness just prior to first jhana. Of course now you will...

Re: New Meditation Center

Vimalaramsi's students are strongly discouraged to look elsewhere. They are only to practise with him and follow his commentary. For example, they are asked not to work with Thanissaro's translations because his understanding is not in accordance with the Buddha's intention. In my humble opinion th...

Re: Metta vs. Breath

Hi, I found this here , it mentions that while the breath meditation is discussed 8 times in the Suttas, Metta is discussed more than one hundred times, is this an indication of a preference towards one of the methods? Did you actually do the work yourself and counted how many times the breath medi...

Re: New Meditation Center

It may actually be very beneficial to do a retreat in a different tradition than Vimalaramsi. Vimalaramsi's students are strongly discouraged to look elsewhere. They are only to practise with him and follow his commentary. For example, they are asked not to work with Thanissaro's translations becau...

Re: Analayo's take on the immaterial states

"I would like to have some discussion about why the Buddha recalled an experience from his youth, and not from his teachers, when considering jhana in its samma- version, the one the Bodhisatta used as a basis there." My take on this is that from his teachers he learned what some call the samatha j...

Re: Question about Mahasi tradition

Thank you for your response, Venerable Dhammanando. If you are familiar with Jordt's work would you say, this lack of accuracy is common for her? I read Erik Braun's recension of her study which was fairly positive (and he didn't mention my quote). So far, I still value her work, but lacking the aca...

Question about Mahasi tradition

Hello, Ingrid Jordt in her study on "Burma's Mass Lay Meditation Movement" writes: Mingun Sayadaw (Bearer of the Three Pitikas and Keeper of the Dhamma Treasure) sent Mahasi Sayadaw and Taung Pulu Sayadaw into the forest for practice ... (p. 21) This study reads like a very well researched book, but...
