Re: Sexual fluidity

no the influence of the Sexual fluidity people is to encourage otherwise straight people to have homosexual experiences, hence validating their sexual fluidity, however the whole push is in one direction only, there is no encouraging gay people to have straight experiences, there would be a huge ou...

Re: Robot Cruelty?

But there is the thing - how can the act be cruel if the the "being" is non sentient? Only if the perpetrator thinks the thing is somehow sentient could the concept of cruelty be valid at all. The Fawlty Towers scene with Basil thrashing the car indicates that Basil believes the car is be...

Re: Robot Cruelty?

The robot doesn't suffer, since it isn't sentient. However, the person committing the cruel acts—even to a non-sentient being—still develops anger and violence and therefore creates unwholesome kamma (kamma as in action, not as the pool of what can happen to you in the future). :goodpost: I remembe...

Re: Do you smoke?

Try Organic tobacco - with no additives at all. Commercial cigarettes and rolling tobacco has many additives purportedly to "preserve" but most are toxic and used to enhance addiction - indeed, since I have been smoking additive free tobacco, I do not really have such strong cravings to sm...

Robot Cruelty?

The video shows a demonstration of a Boston Dynamics Robot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVlhMGQgDkY#t=16" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Apart from any observations about the technical merits and so forth, I was struck by how my own monkey brain could not quite help seei...

Re: Japan may change temple icon to avoid Nazi confusion

Why is the use of the runic swastika by the National Socialists in Germany a "weird appropriation"? By the time Hitler set about designing the Nazi flag, the runic swastika (as found on the Sæbø sword, for example), along with all the other European forms of the swastika, had long since c...

Re: Japan may change temple icon to avoid Nazi confusion

As far as I can see, it's mostly an issue for westerners. Asian people I know have no idea that the swastikas on their clothing (or sometimes tattoos!) is an issue for some people. I look forward to the day when the Nazi's and their weird appropriation of ancient symbolism is forgotten by them . Th...

Re: Are we hypocrites?

To be a hypocrite, one advocates for certain behaviours while not doing so oneself. In order to not be a hypocrite, one should not advocate certain behaviours to others - that is all that is required. This astonishingly simple precept is, however, in practice difficult to achieve - especially when e...

Re: Change bank to change the world... anyone?

I just learned that my bank (Société Générale) persists in speculating on agricultural products and is therefore primarily responsible for world hunger. I realized that better than trying to soothe the symptoms by delivering food to the needy, it is better to go to the root of the problem, stop sup...

Re: And therefore, God does not exist!

New to this thread so forgive me for not continuing it's stream. 'God' or 'gods' can mean so many different things to different people that I think it difficult to discuss unless all are speaking of the same conceptual framework. However, as regards a creator 'god', I can't but reflect that if dual...

Re: And therefore, God does not exist!

 Sigh... the ONLY counterargument you need against a Christian is to ask why their god is the one true god, and the other four million or so gods claimed throughout human history are all false... Yes, it is difficult to keep count of all the gods there are not to believe in. I have a soft...

Re: The Case of the Invisible Buddhist

In america, minorities get respect to the degree that they can: 1. Affect the economic health with their buying choices. 2. Disrupt trade (protests, sit ins etc) Thats one of the reasons that this insulting racial caricature survives into the 21st century http://criticsfromthecouch.com/wp-content/u...

Re: The Case of the Invisible Buddhist

I think it's safe to say that the American media / entertainment complex is the most far reaching on the planet. Millions of people all over the globe have been exposed to shows like Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, Keeping up with the Kardashians etc. What I've found particularly interesting in Am...
