Re: How do you contemplate anicca?
On a cosmic time scale, mountains form and disappear even quicker than a blink of an eye. This universe was born and it will die some day. And again, if we put it into the time frame of our unfathomably long samsara, it too is also just a blink of an eye. That's the nature of all conditioned phenom...

Re: Questions on Mahasi Method?
Hi Michael, The other alternative to the falling and rising of the abdomen is what I call external noting, where when one is set to meditate and whenever one hears a sound, one labels "sound" and so on to each every six sense that arise, doing just that. The usual Mahasi approach is to ha...

Re: Questions on Mahasi Method?
So my question is, if one chooses to do the external noting which consist of noting every object of the six sense media in the open, can they still attain concentration or jhana for that matter? I always hear from the majority that focusing solely on the breath can sufficiently enhance concentratio...

Re: Questions on Mahasi Method?
Well according to the practice and what I've heard and read is that one, if wills, can note the arising and passing of feelings, six sense media etc. and still attain concentration. During my practice, I can definitely say that noting pain, pleasure and all types of things arising has certaintly cre...

Questions on Mahasi Method?
Hey all, In my practice, I do a formal sitting consisting of focusing my awareness or attention to the breath at the abdomen, noting it every time it rises and falls, continuing with that. Aside with that, I also note every sensation or feeling or object that arises out of the six senses, doing this...

Re: Karma, Rebirth and Animals
[ . . . ] that no matter who they are, what distinction we have from them, endless respect is monumentally better than subtle scolding. But as fellow friend, It is more important for you to look back at the incident with the monk and radiate loving kindness and hopes he finds his peace. May we all ...

Re: Karma, Rebirth and Animals
Thank you for the response and as a fellow practitioner who can resonate with your story, I don't dispute the fact that monks or otherwise should dismiss disabled(or otherwise) people from practicing the Dhamma. However, maybe it was my vagueness or some other element failing to express my message ...

Re: Karma, Rebirth and Animals
Personally, I just find it more horrifying to engage in a thought of living a life as say, a disabled person or totally deprived being, who is ignorant of their past life and who lives another life of birth, decay, death. And yet people say rebirth was conjured up to escape the fear of eternal deat...

Re: Karma, Rebirth and Animals
It's a matter of probability. Even within our own human realm, some of us will do something terrible and be reborn into states of woes while some will do something wholesome and be reborn into better states. Let's say the odds for humans to be reborn into good/bad states are 50/50, then the odds of...

Re: Karma, Rebirth and Animals
Thank you for the wonderful and insightful answers.
I really think the resonating aspect of this topic that really struck me was that Karma is crazy and detachment from Samsara is is really the ultimate freedom. Rebirth sounds worse than death.
Thanks for the responses
With metta, mike

Re: Karma, Rebirth and Animals
Perhaps most animals just act like animals and will be reborn at the same level again and again? Because that's the level closest to their 'minds' during their livetimes? Does Buddhist theory allow for animal being born into the body of a man? Yes, that’s quite possible. Especially if the animal ha...

This is helpful thank you. Any more suggestions would be conducive. With metta, mike From the Satipatthana Sutta: "And further, O bhikkhus, if a bhikkhu, in whatever way, sees a body dead, one, two, or three days: swollen, blue and festering, thrown into the charnel ground, he thinks of his ow...

Re: Vipassana Jhanas?
Hi Michael, Thanks for the advice. I am completely clear on what my goal is, its just which is the path that I want to take and I picked this style of practice. All I needed was a head start on what to do. And even analyzing this thread, it displays a sense of uncertianty regarding what Jhana is or...
