Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi on War and Thanissaro's rebuttal
Buddhism: I undertake the precept to abstain from killing and injuring living beings. (However if I do kill, I will inherit the results of my actions) Christianity: Thou Shalt Not Kill. (However, that doesn't seem to stop Christians from killing). The Buddhist texts indicate that undertaking the fi...

Re: celibacy is harder if someone clinging to pervertions
Dear Wolf The reflections on Dead Bodies are meant for monks under the guidance of a teacher. This is not a good idea for lay people. It will unbalance you. Bhante Dhammika writes in "Broken Buddha"... I personally know of numerous cases in Singapore and Malaysia where this has ended up h...

Re: Race, gender a no go?
If you are nice to people they don't see your colour or sex or what ever. (you may find some odd people) They are A LOT of odd people on this planet and during it's history. The Nazi regime, Pol Pot, Stalin, the KKK, the ISIS, Taliban, Al Quaida, the Pancasila milita in Indonesia etc. pp. and the e...

Re: Race, gender a no go?
My apologies Sokehi, I was still angry and irritated about Cooran's thread. I was a bit harsh here. What worries me more than the outright sexism, racism, homophobia etc is attitudes that render it invisible. The usual bland platitudes: we are all the same, we are all equal, we shouldn't see race.....

Re: Race, gender a no go?
But every thread that needed to be shut down is a clear sign that users (some, me, others, them, all or just few) "didn't get it right" in terms of Right Communication. Not to let us users off the hook, but some topics are virtually guaranteed to get ugly. Like the Israel/Palestine thing....

Re: Race, gender a no go?
Sorry, I'm back... I hope that women users will feel more comfortable in this forum in the future. How are they supposed to feel comfortable when threads are locked because men are getting defensive? ...it doesn't matter what gender we are... That attitude is exactly what allows all the BS that wom...

Re: Race, gender a no go?
In my experience some of these "hot" threads degenerate to an endless exchange of fixed views and positions - and yes I know I'm playing or have played this game too. For two days now or so I contemplated: it might be best to post just once, explain my position or view or ideas to a certai...

Re: If someone says women aren't victims of harrassment ....
Why does it always has to be men's fault? Some women complain that they are viewed as sex objects while they themselves are wearing revealing cloth, and joining closely confined profession filled with men with normal hormone levels ( in the army for example ). You overly generalizing. "Women b...

Re: If someone says women aren't victims of harrassment ....
Obviously if you work where alcohol is involved, sometimes some jerk is going to do something bad to you - regardless whether you are male or female. Weak guys can also be victims of abuse by stronger males or emotionally by stronger females. This is samsara. I was hoping a comment like this won't ...

Re: Dutchman Returns Holocaust Medal
If someone says the Palestinians are being persecuted by the Israelis, they are accused of being anti-Semites. What people are against is injustice and war crimes. "People" is a big word fo a lot of different individuals. Some follow reason and condemn what should be condemned: the "...

Re: If someone says women aren't victims of harrassment ....
You understand, where intellectual discourse and debate always somehow misses the boat. It is the heart-mind that can answer the koans of life. Thank you again, Sokehi! You are welcome, sattva :anjali: Ten years ago my ex girlfriend had three jobs at once: paramedic, two days a week working at the ...

Re: If someone says women aren't victims of harrassment ....
For example at nighttime walking behind a woman might be frightening to her. So often I either pass by or change the side of the street for example. This is a subjective, i.e. mind is the forerunner, the fear was mind-made and assumed negativity. my experience is objective, i.e. you could change it...

Re: Dutchman Returns Holocaust Medal
I feel with this man and to send this medal back is very understandable. My grandfather was a doctor in Danzig during WWII and secretly took care of jewish patients when this was forbidden. The jewish community of Berlin planted a tree out of gratitude in Israel for his courage. It is as it is, with...

Re: If someone says women aren't victims of harrassment ....
It is not my right or ability to describe or critise the perception of others. So I assume it is not able for man to really know what women experience. In everyday life I try to practice "abhaya", fearlessnes - to make this a gift. In many cases this is possible. As a man for example it is...
