Re: Translation Request

Thank you. But for those in particular, I was hoping for someone to break down the pronunciation, because I found the translation for those, but no break down, and I want to say it correctly in my mantra practice.

Translation Request

Hello there. I am going to start incorporating my mala into my practice, and plan to use a personal Mantra. I want it in Pali. If you could translate this for me please, it would be much appreciated. And please include a break down of pronunciation (IE: Dukkha, Dook - a). The mind is a field, I wate...

Re: Dependent Origination and the Vedas

Greetings, Is there a reason why we must keep referring to contemporary Western scholars about Dependent Origination? Was there something deficient in the Buddha as a teacher that prompts us to do this? The deficiencies weren't in what the Buddha actually taught. In the context of this topic, it's ...

Re: Dependent Origination and the Vedas

As for the conceiving ( maññati ) of a self at nāmarūpa by the puthujjana, we find a concise example of this at Sn. 3.12 – Dvayatānupassanāsuttaṃ : Anattani attamāniṃ, passa lokaṃ sadevakaṃ; Niviṭṭhaṃ nāmarūpasmiṃ, idaṃ saccanti maññati . “See this world with its gods, considering self in what is n...

I like to think we are, in a certain sense. All life, and non-life is tied together, connected, is it not? Then again. Most of everything I have concluded, has come from the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, and the Pali Suttas.

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

Ahhhh. I understand what it means. And I know in the end it isn't important to our practice. I just simply could not grasp the Theravada idea of Rebirth, because I had percieved it in an entirely different way, one that wasn't taught in the Suttas. All cleared up now though. Back to the important qu...

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

Thank you, Mike. I decided to not be lazy and read through the links you gave me. There are no past lives, the Buddha must have used it as a tool to teach the uneducated, or those who could not comprehend truly, no-self. And because we are all one, I suppose he was right to say that he was all of th...

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

I'm not saying there is no literal rebirth, I'm saying that there is not some little consciousness thningie that transmigrates, just phenomena arising due to causes and conditions. :anjali: Mike But that makes sense, to a degree. But does not agree with the Pali Canon, because the Buddha spoke of h...

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

Both of those accounts are automatically invalid as far as proof goes, because they are asian, and it is ingrained into their culture. Where is the little white girl from America chanting? Where is the little african boy from South Africa wearing the robes? Here: http://www.reversespins.com/proofof...

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

PS. I thought t his wasn't supposed to be a debate... :sage: Mike Lol. Shush! It isn't. I was really hoping for a plain english explanation, and it still isn't a debate, really, I am just trying to figure this out. In all honesty, I am trying to justify to myself the idea of rebirth, by figuring it...

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

---Not really. Did hyou read the sutta? Continuousness arises due to causes and conditions. It is not a "self" and it doesn't "transmigrate". But what happens in a particular moment affects subsequent moments. That's how it is described to work during a normal life as well.. Unle...

Re: An Inquiry/Challenge/Q&A on Literal Rebirth, not a Debate!

[quote="Bodhisvasti" I mean what is 'reborn' into the the future host/body? . It's not a valid question. See the sutta I provided. No-"thing" is reborn... :anjali: Mike[/quote] Then what is? Can't you answer it with simple english right here? And how does it affect the person as...
