Re: Sources for Theravādin perspective on Mahāyāna doctrines

I would also agree with you that the practice of Zazen is a valid method. I don't have a detailed understanding of how it is practiced (in fact, I would be extremely grateful if you could explain it in some detail) but from what I have understood of it, it seems to be quite compatible with Theravad...

Re: your home altar/shrine

Since I moved in with my partner, I have gotten my own shrine & meditation room; I'm very grateful for this privilege. :) As you can see, it's fairly representative of my dual Theravāda and Zen roots, although I tend to err on the side of Zen aesthetics and of Theravāda practice. :yingyang: http://i...

Re: Sources for Theravādin perspective on Mahāyāna doctrines

Actually, the view of reality in chan / zen seems to be summed up in the lankavatara sutra "Things are not as they seem, nor are they otherwise." Which is a long way from "nothing really exists". As far as the hidden atta, i recently read a philosopy snippet somewhere on the net that classified the...

Re: Sources for Theravādin perspective on Mahāyāna doctrines

Parinirvana in Mahayana describes Nirvana as "Self" and "Eternal". This idea is discussed in Vedanta and Buddhism: A Comparative Study as a Vedanta influence. Yes, I already read about the hidden atta belief in the Mahāyāna Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. I'm looking forward to reading the article by Glasen...

Re: Sources for Theravādin perspective on Mahāyāna doctrines

All in all, I think that Soto Zen only has a few doctrinal issues from a Theravada perspective, and certainly in terms of actual practice, the differences aren't necessarily all that big at all. I agree with you, Bakmoon. And I also think that the Buddha-nature and the idea of sudden enlightenment ...

Re: Sources for Theravādin perspective on Mahāyāna doctrines

Thank you all for your help so far. I'm slowly working myself through the linked content. :) Especially Bhikkhu Thanissaro seems to have spent some time on talking about Mahāyānist ideas. So far, I have only listened to his talk about Buddha-dhātu. While I see his points, especially that the concept...

Sources for Theravādin perspective on Mahāyāna doctrines?

I'm interested in sources that try to delineate Theravādin doctrinal stances in relation to the common Mahāyāna doctrines (e.g., Madhyamaka, Yogācāra, Tathāgatagarbha). The thing is, I practice in two traditions, Theravāda and Sōtō Zen, and I actually feel that it is a helpful and good combination f...

Re: Can you please help me identify these scenes?

Thank you very much, both of you! :) Ah, 12 as Mara's daughters makes much more sense. I forgot that they came to the Buddha after his enlightenment. Regarding 14, I had a weak suspicion that it might represent the Buddha's return from the Tavatimsa heaven but I wasn't sure at all. Looks like 8-10 (...

Can you please help me identify these scenes?

Recently, I purchased a beautiful hammered copper picture that depicts the life of the Buddha on the border: http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e177/caldorian/HammeredCopperPicture01.jpg I am a bit uncertain about some of these scenes/episodes, however, and need your help to identify them. I numbered...

I saw this today and it seems to be one fitting answer to your question: http://theravadin.wordpress.com/2012/02 ... yesterday/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Labeling Oneself As Buddhist

As my meditation grows deeper, I find the labels that I used to apply to myself no longer feel useful. First it was words like liberal, atheist, agnostic, skeptic, ADHD, anxious, intelligent, etc. . My question is: is holding on to the sense of "I am Buddhist" beneficial? If I were to try and drop ...

Re: Greetings from Southern Germany!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Welcome Caldorian! I think about visiting the Buddha-Haus next year, too. Good to hear that the place is fine and i hope you will enjoy the retreat in June! Best wishes, Alobha I don't have much to compare it to but I always enjoy my time there. It...

Greetings from Southern Germany!

Hi there! I had been to the the Dhamma Wheel forums several times before, mostly to read the interesting discussions here, but this time I finally decided to register. I've been practicing the Dhamma for approximately five years now, so one could say that I'm not completely new to Buddhism. (Then ag...
