Re: Back to self!

Greetings, "By regarding" - you are implying that someone is regarding who is being asked to not regard (the illusory self from dependent arising is being asked not to regard.) But any statement about the illusory self being asked not to regard brings out the illusory self! There is no such implicat...

How does one get past this paradox?
By regarding all dhammas as not-self, and forgetting about this ontological "no self" idea.

Re: Can we only play not work?

Greetings, I have two paid jobs... One job is a Monday to Friday professional job, and as far as a well-paid job to support the family etc. it's ideal - it's Right Livelihood, it's close to home, I get to work with good people, I get one RDO per fortnight, it aligns with my skills and interests etc....

...who/what is being asked to understand that the self is an illusion?

...Who is being asked?
Wrong questions.

Seeing things is great. Have you seen the 2 sutta quotes I brought above, explicitly explaining how self view comes to be?
Sure, I didn't realise they required a response...

Re: How does the self view arises ?

Greetings Circle5, To be fair though, anyone who has mentioned paticcasamuppada has noted the role of vedana... There is nothing in Paticca about the mental tendency towards conceit and how the opinion that there is a self arises. According to your take on paticcasamuppada perhaps. Those who don't s...

Re: How Many Must One Cut?

Greetings, Any ideas what the Blessed one is referring to in this sutta ? Can we guess? :D Context would suggest to me that it's possibly... Cut five (lower) fetters, abandon five cords of sense pleasure Develop five faculties/powers ... but there's so many lists in the suttas, it could well be some...

Re: How does the self view arises ?

Greetings, I am surprised we are at page 3 and nobody pointed this out already. To be fair though, anyone who has mentioned paticcasamuppada has noted the role of vedana... From ignorance as a requisite condition come fabrications. From fabrications as a requisite condition comes consciousness. From...

Re: Theravada for Beginner

Greetings, Hey, guys. Do you think I should start by studying The Eightfold Path or Mindfulness (Anapanasati)? They're not separate things... Samma Sati (right mindfulness) and Samma Samadhi (right concentration) are the 7th and 8th elements of the Noble Eightfold Path, respectively. Metta, Paul. :)

Greetings,

It's a kind offer, but speaking personally, I would not have any need for such a feature, nor would I feel any inclination to track and share such information.

Sam Vara is stepping down as moderator

Greetings,

Sam Vara has decided to step down from the moderator role today, after having served the Dhamma Wheel community well in this role over the past 12 months.

I would like to publicly thank him for that contribution.

Re: Discord within the Sangha

Greetings Agarika, Did the monk disrobing (or alternatively changing monasteries) share the opinion that the Vinaya was adhered to and if yes, why did he still disapprove? Was there maybe additional personal animosity, so true adherence to rules was not the actual issue? Well, as I said from the out...

Re: Does Theravāda avoid elitist interference in the affairs of others?

Greetings James, Could you elaborate how those people with bodhisattva vow interfere in the affairs of all sentient beings ? Isn't making a vow does not necessarily in reality interfering in the affairs ? "The Bodhisattva vow is the vow taken by Mahayana Buddhists to liberate all sentient beings." (...
