Re: What is the "pre-sectarian period" ???

Greetings Thomas, "Early Buddhism" is "pre-sectarian Buddhism", according to Yin Shun (see pp. 2-5 and note 3, Choong Mun-keat, The Fundamental Teachings of Early Buddhism ). Yes, I understand that is the standard academic position, though I hope I have adequately explained why for me the two are no...

Re: What is the "pre-sectarian period" ???

Greetings, Given Bhikkhu Sujato appears to include the Samyutta Agama within the "pre-sectarian period", what would be the date of this "pre-sectarian period"? I think the only time that could reasonably be said to be "pre-sectarian" is when the Buddha himself was alive. During that time, people cou...

Re: Meaning of feeling in feelings ?

Greetings James,

I've always understood it to mean "in and of themselves"... i.e. devoid of conceptual overlay or inference.

Or in other words, tathata (thusness, suchness)

Re: Is buddhism difficult? Why?

Greetings John, My reading of Thanissaro Bhikkhu suggests that stopping (the cycle of fabrication and becoming) is certainly the goal , but how it applies to the path to the goal is more complex. He seems to say that skillful fabrication is a necessary part of the path (he might even say the path is...

Personally, I would not use the analogy of "running". For me, this is contrary to the path. Nibbana is reached by "stopping" rather than by "running".
:goodpost:

A very true take on the nature of the path, that may appear counter-intuitive to some.

Re: Is buddhism difficult? Why?

Greetings Lostitude, I often find myself dreaming about having my own personal arahant teacher who would guide me to liberation by simply telling me "now you do this" and "now you do that" and all I'd have to do would be to follow what he says. Not a very useful dream, because: 1. That won't happen ...

Re: Is there a wrong way to becoming a Buddhist?

Greetings, I would echo Zom's recommendation about reading the suttas. This way you will know what the Buddha actually taught and by having a firm grounding in his teaching you will not be led astray by other things carrying the "Buddhist" banner, or by well-meaning, but misled individuals. Also, yo...
