Re: Gender and the Sakyadhita

Greetings, :goodpost: This is a good example of "right view without effluents", conducive to transcendence. "And what is right view? Right view, I tell you, is of two sorts: There is right view with effluents, siding with merit, resulting in acquisitions [of becoming]; there is right view that is no...

Re: Gender and the Sakyadhita

Greetings, I'm looking at the relationships between the two - as in, how gender roles are fundamentally described by the Buddha, and how these are interpreted and carried out in the present by Buddhists. I'm also asking for your personal interpretation of sacred literature - what do you think of gen...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

Greetings, Just thinking aloud, but why even ordain in a tradition, and be fed and clothed by them, if you reject large parts of this tradition. If you strip abhidhamma and commentaries away, what is left hardly constitues Theravada anymore. At which point you'd have zero traditions which...

Re: Why speech ceased in first Jhana?

Greetings Sarath, Which means, I can't even walk if I am in first Jhana? Read MN 20 and tell us what you think... Just as the thought would occur to a man walking quickly, 'Why am I walking quickly? Why don't I walk slowly?' So he walks slowly. The thought occurs to him, 'Why am I walking slowly? Wh...

Re: Why speech ceased in first Jhana?

Greetings Sarath, Why speech ceased in first Jhana? The jhanas constitute a "thinning out" of the fabrications and activities of daily life. You'll note that each jhana is generally characterised not by what's there, but by that which is no longer present. The process of speech, and the thoughts and...

Re: Shambhala international

Greetings, Do any of you have experience with this group? It was started by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche back in the seventies and is now led by his son Miphpan Rinpoche. One of the main people over there is also Nun and well known author Pema Chodron. Maybe you could ask over at the Mahayana / Vajrayan...

Re: theravada

Greetings,

Ok. Questions have been answered.

Grigoris - Maybe check out the Simsapa Sutta if you want to learn the Buddha's attitude about that which he did not teach.

Re: theravada

Greetings Grigoris, Somehow I don't think the Buddha considered refusing to overcome one's ignorance as an instance of sense restraint. One doesn't need to know everything about every topic in order to become an arahant. The Buddha didn't know about computers or inter-continental ballistic missiles,...

no and i more than likely will not
Now that is a good attitude!
If it's for the purposes of sense restraint, it's a very good attitude, in Theravada.

If you are not interested in those threads, I suggest that you ignore them.
And if you need us to complement your sense restraint by turning the Connections section off for you, just ask.
