Re: Back to self!

Greetings Circle5, simply because you are dissatisfied with the answer. Can you quote me the answer in question, if you claim or imply there was any? The Buddha had a turn of phrase, “Then householder, explain it, as it occurs to you.” The import of this, was that he allowed the householder to expre...

Re: Back to self!

Greetings Circle5, You jumped a question: "Do you regard suffering (a feeling) as self? Do you regard the perception of suffering as self? Do you believe there is a self apart from suffering? Do you regard the thought that "there is a self that suffers" to be self? Do you believe there might be a se...

Re: An escape from painful feeling aside from sensual pleasure.?

Greetings, This seems to relate to a certain response to painful feeling that is rooted in wisdom and equanimity. The key to it is allowing it to be "thus" - i.e. not proliferating beyond the painful feeling, and not becoming emotionally or intellectually enmeshed in the painful feeling. You can see...

Re: What Have You Learned

Greetings, What are some teachings, perspectives, experiences, or whatever that you have learned a long your walk on the path that have made a lasting and very profound impact in your life? Any teaching connected to emptiness... Staying at Savatthi. "Monks, there once was a time when the Dasarahas h...

Re: How long does it take to overcome destructive choices?

Greetings, I just feel burnt out fighting against myself. Don't do that - that won't help. Also, try not to demonize "entertainment" otherwise you're just creating an aversion towards it, and that's just more aversion, isn't it? Replacing "greed" with "aversion" is not a winning trade. Relinquishmen...

Re: Dealing with tragedy

Greetings No_Mind, How is a Buddhist to deal with great trauma/tragedy and huge, unspeakable amount of stress? Is one to retract and become like a rock? :namaste: Practices like the brahma-viharas would help, but it would be most helpful to practice them before these situations arise, so that they a...

Re: Back to self!

Greetings, "By regarding" - you are implying that someone is regarding who is being asked to not regard (the illusory self from dependent arising is being asked not to regard.) But any statement about the illusory self being asked not to regard brings out the illusory self! There is no such implicat...

How does one get past this paradox?
By regarding all dhammas as not-self, and forgetting about this ontological "no self" idea.

Re: Can we only play not work?

Greetings, I have two paid jobs... One job is a Monday to Friday professional job, and as far as a well-paid job to support the family etc. it's ideal - it's Right Livelihood, it's close to home, I get to work with good people, I get one RDO per fortnight, it aligns with my skills and interests etc....

...Who is being asked?

Seeing things is great. Have you seen the 2 sutta quotes I brought above, explicitly explaining how self view comes to be?

Re: How does the self view arises ?

Greetings Circle5, To be fair though, anyone who has mentioned paticcasamuppada has noted the role of vedana... There is nothing in Paticca about the mental tendency towards conceit and how the opinion that there is a self arises. According to your take on paticcasamuppada perhaps. Those who don't s...
