Re: Diversity among mods

Greetings Lyndon, Well an exclusively white? Western group of Buddhists could greatly learn from the majority of Therevada Buddhists who are overwhelmingly brown and Asian Out of interest... do you recognise any of the following people? https://littlebang.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/ajahn-sujin2.jpg...

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

Greetings, Personally, I think non-killing is the most important. A person could lie to me, steal from me; but at least I'd still be alive. True, but as the precept could be interpreted to extend to "small creatures & parasites", as per the OP, this is a really hard one to assess... If it relates to...

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

Greetings, I selected lying, because Dhamma is the truth, and lying and falsehood is the polar opposite of the truth. Yes, all the others are bad, and are manifestations of ignorance, greed, and aversion... but since lying takes you in the polar opposite direction to the Dhamma, lying and a lack of ...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

Greetings Sarath, My understanding is they both contain Buddha's teaching. (say 99%) Do you mean that 99% of what is said in these sources was literally said by the Buddha, and that the elders compiled additional content from the Blessed One which had been omitted from the suttas, for whatever reaso...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

Greetings, Internally, the creation of the Abhdhamma Pitaka is unattributed to any author. Attribution for the creation of the Abhidhamma teaching was made in subsequent commentary. The Visuddhimagga was either authored and/or compiled by ven. Buddhaghosa. Given this elder lived roughly one millenni...

I have noticed a practical difference between "seeing" ( an activity ) and "sights" ( visible objects ).
Using the scale above, attention on the activity of seeing is one notch closer to emptiness than attention on objectified sights.

Re: Does anyone know of a good critique of Abhidhamma/Commentaries in Burmese?

Greetings, friends don't led friends drive drunk. friends don't let friends hold wrong views? As I see it... If someone is Burmese, and has access to Burmese Buddhism, I'd be wary of blitzing holes in something of theirs, especially if I didn't have something which was both better and understandable...

Greetings Robert, Are the suttas actually saying this is the case though, or just "the ancients"? Because if being a " monk in Sri Lanka " is regarded as no particular grounds for authority, then I wonder how (other than playing favourites) why the weight of authority attributable on that basis is a...

Greetings Mike, However, I don't think that affects the basic principle of focussing on the "less conceptual"... I agree, and thank you for expanding upon what ven. Nanananda's said by bringing attention to the possibility of a continuum of conceptualization. This is a much better platform for discu...

Greetings Saengnapha, Your Krishnamurti-esque ad-hominem argumentation is off-topic. I am not the topic - the topic is the topic. Please learn to differentiate between the two. Please also be reminded that psychoanalysing other members is off-topic, doubly so when it's entirely irrelevant to the top...

Greetings,

:offtopic:

OK... this footnote business and accusations of lying etc. is getting a bit too far removed from the topic at hand.

If there is actually anything meaningful and ToS-compliant in that space that needs to be said, please start a new topic.

Greetings No_Mind, There are six cases when the pārājika 1 is not committed: When the bhikkhu is sleeping or in all other cases when he is not aware of the sexual intercourse when it takes place. How non-conceptual is "non-conceptual" vipassana, really?

Greetings, We learn in the Dhammapada, that the mind precedes all things... 1. Mind precedes all dhammas. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox. 2. Mind precedes all dhammas....

Paul, why did you ask?
I'd seen the argument presented in the past, and was keen to see if, and how, it could be substantiated. Furthermore whether there was any scriptural backing behind such reasoning.

Re: why is authenticity under-valued

It would seem somewhat ironic to over-emphasise a scientific/materialistic approach to verifying the authenticity of a religious path whose texts reject that approach I guess the Mahayanists whose sutras were found underneath a rock by a naga would likely agree with you. M...
