Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Greetings Sam,

I do like that!

I wonder if such an approach has any explicit parallel in the suttas?

Paul. :)

Do we currently have anyone wanting it to exist and not exist, or anyone wanting it to neither exist nor not not exist?
I hope not, as we'd be in quite a tetralemma then!

The current dilemma is more than enough...

sounds like a plan?
When we currently have literally...

1/3rd wanting it to exist in some form
1/3rd wanting it to not-exist
1/3rd somewhere in the grey zone

... who knows?

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings James, Just a suggestion: Maybe make that section an "opt-in" subforum, which is hidden as a default. I've seen that tried elsewhere, and the "opt in" rate is usually very low. Even moreso if you don't go to the effort to constantly promote it to members as an option. In effect, it kills o...

Don't worry about trying to keep everyone happy. Sometimes medicine tastes awful, and children must be forced to take it!

Good point. We'll be aiming to do whatever seems best for the forum and membership at large... can't satisfy everyone.

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings. if there is a way to make news and politics along with lounge topics not show up in active topics it would keep it out of sight for me. Well, you can only stop them showing up in Active Topics if you don't have access to those sections. You can do that for News, and self-serve instruction...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings, Early days, but with such a broad range of responses, it's definitely going to be hard to come up with a solution that will keep everyone happy! Nonetheless, we'll do our best to find a solution that addresses the concerns as best we can. In the meantime, do keep voting, and I'd love to h...

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Greetings, Only after having realized the Dhamma, he can say "There is no other possibility, only this is true" and know not only that it is he would also know exactly how it is and isn't. Even if one were to regard the Dhamma thusly, others with similar certitude will have different understandings ...

Is Topicless Friendly Banter bad too? (I ask because it's the most truly Loungey topic in the Lounge at the moment.)

Charcoal is made from wood, not coal.
Yes, but so is coal.

Both are derived from plantlife, and share the same etymology for a reason.

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Greetings DooDoot,

Fair enough. What was presented was Thanissaro Bhikkhu's translation.

Unfortunately Nanamoli's translation at A2I is merely an excerpt, and doesn't include that particular tract of text.

Developing understanding - whilst avoiding slander, born of contention

Greetings, What follows is a partial extract from Snp 4.11 , which seems particularly relevant to today's politically charged climate... "From what arise contentions and disputes, lamentations and sorrows, along with selfishness and conceit, and arrogance along with slander? From where do these vari...

Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Greetings, In the Dhamma, doubt is one of the five hindrances. Doubt specifically about the Dhamma also causes issues... "Furthermore, there is the case of the person in doubt & perplexity, who has not arrived at certainty with regard to the True Dhamma. Then he comes down with a serious disease. As...

Re: Yesterday Trump Called Latinos "Animals"

Greetings pulga,

I thought his "12 years to citizenship" DACA plan (I forgot what it was called exactly) was very fair and generous.

Democrats voted against it, because I don't really think they want the problem solved.

Actually, the Dhamma teaches otherwise.
