Re: Trump. And why I hate him.

Greetings, My good friend Retro Greeting there, Alan. ...you said "Hate is evil". I see no reason to support this. The performance of good actions gives rise to merit (punna), a quality which purifies and cleanses the mind. If the mind is unchecked, it has the tendency to be ruled by evil tendencies...

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

Greetings L.N., ... it's just that we had one particular member who took it upon himself to play Dhamma Cop and incessantly hound and badger anyone who said anything contrary to his understandings of what was important, what should be respected and what should be protected. I understand you are refe...

In your own quote, Paul.
Sweet! I got tricked by the fact the sutta was called the Metta Sutta, instead of the Brahmavihara Sutta!

Re: Feminism for men

Greetings Stiphan, Safety and security to name one. ... which of course is not in any way specific to females. Women face far more suffering, especially at the hands of men, than the other way around. ... and this would be proveable how exactly? You don't know what rape is. I don't either, and few m...

Re: Compassion in Theravada

Greetings Paul, their practice can only result at best in rebirth in the brahma realm... Yet if awareness of the impermanence of metta is cultivated, the future is bright! AN 4.126 Metta Sutta "Monks, there are these four types of individuals to be found existing in the world. Which four? "There is ...

Re: Feminism for men

Greetings Stiphan, That's great, but does it address the issues females face other than the goal of equality? Which goals... supremacy?! :o  I think you can combine both, though, and you could also add men's rights and you have a "full house". It's true that there are arguably different chal...

Greetings,

Rather than divide up things by gender, I'm more inclined towards egalitarianism.

May all beings be happy.

Re: Compassion in Theravada

Greetings Stiphan, The point of the thread is: Do you think compassion is indeed not emphasized enough in Theravāda theory and practice as it should be? From what I hear of contemporary metta meditation instructions, many of them appear to actually be a hybrid of metta and karuna. To that end, it do...

Re: Compassion in Theravada

Greetings Stiphan, My take is that compassion is to be cultivated for the suffering of others. The specifics of the suffering do not matter, as all specifics simply boil down to dukkha. In fact, I find it best not to dwell on the specifics, as that could lead one to dwell upon subjects which are not...

Greetings Lyndon, Maybe you're not one of the people that stands to directly suffer from Trump's policies, I am!! I'm just curious which policy or outcome of the Trump presidency is causing you to suffer? Is it... - The highest unemployment rates since 2001? - The lowest consumer confidence since 20...

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

Greetings binocular, But much to my surprise, and even bewilderment, it has happened several times that some people criticized me for this, and put forward an attitude of "This is the politics section, the Dhamma isn't to be discussed here" or "This is the politics section, a place where we can fina...

Re: Trump. And why I hate him.

Greetings Lyndon,

If it's "love" borne of attachment and greed, then it may well be.

Yet, if it's borne of openness / loving-kindess, compassion or wisdom, then it's a very good thing.

Paul. :)

Re: Worry about kids - is there any way to avoid it, or is this just life?

Greetings manas,

I tend not to worry unnecessarily about my children. I see that worrying would not improve their welfare or the quality of my parenting, so I don't do it.

Re: Trump. And why I hate him.

Greetings, DooDoot, Are you a Trump supporter? Obviously DooDoot is best positioned to speak on this, but my understanding (from this and other topics) is that there are aspects of what Trump has done that DooDoot approves of. There are aspects of what Trump has done that DooDoot doesn't approve of....
