Re: Worry about kids - is there any way to avoid it, or is this just life?

Greetings manas,

I tend not to worry unnecessarily about my children. I see that worrying would not improve their welfare or the quality of my parenting, so I don't do it.

Re: Trump. And why I hate him.

Greetings, DooDoot, Are you a Trump supporter? Obviously DooDoot is best positioned to speak on this, but my understanding (from this and other topics) is that there are aspects of what Trump has done that DooDoot approves of. There are aspects of what Trump has done that DooDoot doesn't approve of....

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

Mr. Man, In my opinion now more than ever this forum is being driven by an ideological agenda. So you say. ...and say..... and say... The old admin was removed and so was one moderator. From staff, yes... and the admin was offered a moderator role, if he wanted to moderate according to the Te...

Greetings binocular, Here is why I hate Trump, and why you should, too. This post is clearly against the TOS: 2. Speech g. Attacks against the Buddha, Dhamma, or Sangha, which violate the Intention of this forum (See Section 1. Intention for details) It looks like he will get away with it on a techn...

I won money on a bet that Trump would be elected 8-) People are too predictable.
Likewise. It's the only time I've ever bet any money on anything other than a few dollars on the Melbourne Cup horse race.

Re: Trump. And why I hate him.

Greetings,

Nowadays I generally don't tell people how great Trump is, because they either already know, or they don't want to hear it. People have had enough time to decide for themselves how they feel about the matter.

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

Greetings, I just wanted to say something rather personal, that I'm sure will resonate with some long-term members, which I think is quite relevant to much of what has been said in this topic to date. About roughly 4 years ago (possibly in line with Bhikkhu Bodhi's growing interest in activism?), th...

Re: Only one more week to the winter solstice!

Greetings,

Also, feel free to give the Earth's axis a nudge, if you have the means to do so... balancing out the seasons a bit would be nice.

(I can just imagine the climate change activists recoil in horror at my suggestion...)

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

Greetings Eelco, This type of inquiry comes up every so often after a Forum has had a chance to develop to some maturity over time. As people come and go the dynamics of the forum and the outlook/incentive to participate of "older" members change, So a better question other than making a forum more ...

Could you be more specific about which sankhata dhammas cease in your view?
All of them, but as you know from previous discussions you have a different understanding of what constitutes a sankhata-dhamma than I.

Re: Only one more week to the winter solstice!

Greetings, Down under it's the opposite, of course... long days and plenty of sunshine! (Which I really appreciate given that I tend to briefly get Seasonal Affective Disorder around our Winter solstice, so this is the complete opposite) I love this time of year, because Christmas is coming up (whic...

Re: Is Nibbana cessation of being?

Greetings Sarath, What is the Pali word for "being"? Two options that come to mind are "satta" or "bhava" - I'm no expert, but the satta seems like a noun, and bhava seems like an adjective. Bhava obviously makes an appearance in the paticcasamuppada formula, so it's probably most apt here (translat...

Re: Is Nibbana cessation of being?

Greetings Sarath, Is Nibbana a cessation of being? Yes. Is cessation means annihilation? Cessation means the cessation of sankhata-dhammas. Do you speak of "annihilation" in the context of dhammas? I find it more natural to see it in terms of the second half of the standard idappaccayata structure. ...
