Re: Why did the Buddha meditate ???

Greetings DooDoot, "Then which things should an arahant attend to in an appropriate way?" "An arahant should attend in an appropriate way to these five clinging-aggregates as inconstant, stressful, a disease, a cancer, an arrow, painful, an affliction, alien, a dissolution, an emptiness, not-self. What do you make of this?
It looks like they gave the Buddha a set of robes?

Re: Ven. Nanananda

Greetings Craig, Yes, idealism (at least in its extreme form) is a view of "non-existence" and materialism is a view of "existence"... hence the "polarity" spoken of in SN 12.15 I would take some issue with this statement. Idealism asserts the reality of the external world. It merely states that the...

Re: Ven. Nanananda

Greetings Craig, Nah it’s good faith. I’m not out to “bash” anything. I don’t care if he is teaching idealism or maya. I suspected so, but just wanted to make the terms of my engagement clear. Having been on the forums for about 14 years now, I've got a pretty good idea what conversations are or are...

Re: Ven. Nanananda

Greetings Craig, Those with materialistic leanings will tend to find idealism in that which does not accord with their way of seeing. Re: Ven. Nanananda

Greetings Craig, I’ve heard some people say that Ven. Nanananda is an Idealist or an illusionist (maya). Is this a fair description? No. This gives an indication on how he sees things... Even though he is able to recognize objects by their conventional names, for the purpose of comprehending name-an...

Re: Uṇṇābha the brahmin

Greetings, Found it! And furthermore, just as whatever great rivers there are — such as the Ganges, the Yamunā, the Aciravatī, the Sarabhū, the Mahī — on reaching the ocean, give up their former names and are classed simply as 'ocean'; in the same way, when members of the four castes — noble warrior...

Re: Uṇṇābha the brahmin

Greetings, I don't know whether being a brahmin refers to Unnabha's beliefs before they have been corrected by the Buddha, or his birth-status. Would it be possible for someone to be a non-returner and still be referred to as a brahmin? There's a sutta somewhere that says something to the effect tha...

Re: Uṇṇābha the brahmin

Greetings, Yes, Walshe thinks that Unnabha's line of questioning was not geared towards the uncovering of a self, or entrapping the Buddha into admitting there was such a thing, precisely because he was a non-returner. This would imply that the Blessed One's declaration of Unnabha's status referred ...

Re: Uṇṇābha the brahmin

Greetings, My take is simply that because Uṇṇābha was a brahmin, he was probably expecting that the answers to his line of questioning would ultimately trace back to atman or perhaps Brahma . However, Uṇṇābha the brahmin was wise and did not reject the Buddha's answer, and instead saw the wisdom in ...

Space is a “thing” which can be twisted and distorted due to mass, hence gravity and black holes.
You are looking in the wrong direction, friend.

Re: Paṭiccasamuppāda and Space

Greetings Craig, If we assume that paṭiccasamuppāda refers to external “things” ... then we have taken paṭiccasamuppāda well beyond the scope of which the Buddha taught it. When did he ever teach it, independently of avijja (even if avijja isn't always explicitly mentioned)? and not just to how the ...

Re: Insomnia

Greetings,

I take herbal supplements to help me get to sleep quicker, specifically this one.

Do I NEED it? Probably not, but having two young children in the house means that I'm willing to invest in whatever sleep I can get.

Could it perhaps be Vinaya commentary / backstory?
