Re: Should starbucks allow non- customers to use restrooms and seating?

Greetings, Where?? Starbucks USA. They have an interesting history in recent years of pandering to the left, which rather than placating them, seems to incentivise them to make ever more egregious demands upon the organization. Many non-leftists no longer frequent Starbucks due to their policies and...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings Dhammarakkhito, what's wrong with the ten topics of conversation prescribed here: www.buddha-vacana.org/sutta/anguttara/10/an10-069.html sure, politics is popular and a lot of people are going to vote to keep it. but the dhamma runs counter to what the world finds endearing I don't disagre...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings Kim, Just out of interest, were you to be managing a News & Current Events section of a Buddhist forum, what measures would you implement to improve the calibre of discussion, whilst respecting the spiritual and intellectual autonomy of the membership? (I guess that question also goes out ...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings, OWTTE "Or words to that effect" I don't know what the original words were, nor who spoke them, but I doubt anyone said or meant "let them fight it out" in any literal sense. Far more specifically, what we've done is to allow a "marketplace of ideas" where all perspectives are allowed to h...

i guess some would even deny bathroom access to a monk that's not allowed to carry money??
Some would.

Why would you expect otherwise when the world is neither a commune, a family, nor a Sangha?

Re: Should starbucks allow non- customers to use restrooms and seating?

Greetings Lyndon, What if you have no money?? Do you even care about people that have no money???? Of course. That's why I support successful, heroic leaders whose economic policies support the establishment of "full employment", so that there can be a job for anyone who wants one. This sense of ent...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings James, Now that I've opted out of the News and Politics section, everything looks nice and restful, and dhammic. Highly recommended. I'm glad you like it. That's precisely why we split the News out of the Lounge and created that functionality in the first place. Unfortunately, most who hav...

Re: Should starbucks allow non- customers to use restrooms and seating?

Greetings Lyndon, Have you never needed to go to the bathroom and they said no because you weren't a customer?? I don't think so, but then, in such a circumstance where there might be agree of urgency about matters, I would happily make a minor purchase in order to become a customer. Metta, Paul. :)

Greetings Sam,

I do like that!

I wonder if such an approach has any explicit parallel in the suttas?

Do we currently have anyone wanting it to exist and not exist, or anyone wanting it to neither exist nor not not exist?
I hope not, as we'd be in quite a tetralemma then!

The current dilemma is more than enough...

sounds like a plan?
When we currently have literally...

1/3rd wanting it to exist in some form
1/3rd wanting it to not-exist
1/3rd somewhere in the grey zone

... who knows?

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings James, Just a suggestion: Maybe make that section an "opt-in" subforum, which is hidden as a default. I've seen that tried elsewhere, and the "opt in" rate is usually very low. Even moreso if you don't go to the effort to constantly promote it to members as an option. In effect, it kills o...

Don't worry about trying to keep everyone happy. Sometimes medicine tastes awful, and children must be forced to take it!

Good point. We'll be aiming to do whatever seems best for the forum and membership at large... can't satisfy everyone.

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings. if there is a way to make news and politics along with lounge topics not show up in active topics it would keep it out of sight for me. Well, you can only stop them showing up in Active Topics if you don't have access to those sections. You can do that for News, and self-serve instruction...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings, Early days, but with such a broad range of responses, it's definitely going to be hard to come up with a solution that will keep everyone happy! Nonetheless, we'll do our best to find a solution that addresses the concerns as best we can. In the meantime, do keep voting, and I'd love to h...

Greetings, Only after having realized the Dhamma, he can say "There is no other possibility, only this is true" and know not only that it is he would also know exactly how it is and isn't. Even if one were to regard the Dhamma thusly, others with similar certitude will have different understandings ...

Charcoal is made from wood, not coal.
Yes, but so is coal.

Both are derived from plantlife, and share the same etymology for a reason.
