Re: Fake News Awards

Greetings,

Because he's great...

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the songs of angry men?
It is the music of the people
Who will not be slaves again!

Re: Do the suttas mention the Buddha laughing

Greetings, Bhikkhus, singing is crying in this discipline of the noble ones and dancing is insanity. Bhikkhus, it is childish to laugh too long showing your teeth. Therefore give up singing, dancing and it is suitable that you, delighting in the Teaching should laugh to a certain extent only. ( Sour...

Re: Should abusive behaviour by monks and nuns towards lay people be public ally discussed on these forums?

Greetings Robbie, So long as you make clear that you're relaying your own personal experiences, it should be fine. Do try however to avoid hearsay and gossip, sticking only to what you know first-hand to be so. This may help... "There is the case where a certain person, abandoning false speech, abst...

Re: Diversity among mods

Greetings Sarath, Some times we all have the tendency to carry away with our feelings so we end up with falling on our own swards. Hopefully less so if we practice the brahma-vihara of equanimity, and aspects of the path such as Right Effort, and Right Mindfulness. That said, we don't expect anyone ...

Re: Diversity among mods

Greetings, Just to clarify a couple of points, since these matters have come up in the conversation: - No, there has been no disciplinary action against Alan in recent times. - No one is discriminated against by staff on account of their political views. Once upon a time this would have happened (as...

Is there a particular forum in which to post questions/thoughts on readings?
Not specifically. Just pick the section that looks most relevant to the subject matter of your question. :)

Re: All dhammas are personal, not public

Greetings C,

To be honest, I wouldn't know, because I am not au fait with the Mahayana Buddhists of old. It could be the same, it could be different, but I would know either way.

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

Greetings, Personally, I think non-killing is the most important. A person could lie to me, steal from me; but at least I'd still be alive. True, but as the precept could be interpreted to extend to "small creatures & parasites", as per the OP, this is a really hard one to assess... If it relates to...

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

Greetings, I selected lying, because Dhamma is the truth, and lying and falsehood is the polar opposite of the truth. Yes, all the others are bad, and are manifestations of ignorance, greed, and aversion... but since lying takes you in the polar opposite direction to the Dhamma, lying and a lack of ...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

Greetings Sarath, My understanding is they both contain Buddha's teaching. (say 99%) Do you mean that 99% of what is said in these sources was literally said by the Buddha, and that the elders compiled additional content from the Blessed One which had been omitted from the suttas, for whatever reaso...

Re: The Visuddhi Magga and Abhidhamma may not have been taught by the Buddha! (Sama dengan Bahasa)

Greetings, Internally, the creation of the Abhdhamma Pitaka is unattributed to any author. Attribution for the creation of the Abhidhamma teaching was made in subsequent commentary. The Visuddhimagga was either authored and/or compiled by ven. Buddhaghosa. Given this elder lived roughly one millenni...

I have noticed a practical difference between "seeing" ( an activity ) and "sights" ( visible objects ).
Using the scale above, attention on the activity of seeing is one notch closer to emptiness than attention on objectified sights.

Re: Does anyone know of a good critique of Abhidhamma/Commentaries in Burmese?

Greetings, friends don't led friends drive drunk. friends don't let friends hold wrong views? As I see it... If someone is Burmese, and has access to Burmese Buddhism, I'd be wary of blitzing holes in something of theirs, especially if I didn't have something which was both better and understandable...
